Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Re. hilot How many FMA practitioners on this list practice hilot? How many of their teachers practiice hilot? I suspect that the percentage would be incredibly low, hence I have no trouble with Al Sardinas' claim that Baet's hilot "separates him from the rest," so to speak. In general, moreover, hyperbole is meant to be read as hyperbole - as a rhetorical device to honor someone or something. Let's not split hairs just because other FMA teachers may practice hilot - most don't. On the other hand, I suspect that a lot of them may practice some form of healing therapy as part of their martial arts, and this forum is the place to discuss the issue further. Momoy Canete practiced faith healing and was considered an incredible bonesetter. He often treated people for free in his backyard after class. My teacher, Tom Bisio, was impressed enough by Momoy's abilities to include several of his oracions in our student handbook. Subsequently, Tom went on to study tui na, acupuncture, and herbology, and is well-known for his ability to treat martial-arts related injuries. Several of his students, myself included, have followed in his footsteps by learning die da medicine, because we consider it an important aspect of our teaching. With respect to the gentleman with the dislocated finger, Zheng Gu Shui is too hot for a recent injury - in theory, you'd want to use it later in cold, damp weather if it started to ache, for example. If you email me privately with some more particulars I'd be glad to give you some more advice about how to speed up the healing process. Christoph Amberger. This book is a must inclusion in any library of martial arts, military battles, weaponry or swordplay. As mentioned by Brian, its merits include - diverse era and cultures, from ancient gladiatorial times to World War II - lots of pictures and illustrations - many anecdotes, facts, descriptions and first-hand accounts of duels, ancient weapons, battle re-enactments, etc. - in addition to sword or weapons techniques, discussion of various issues such as the psychology of a fight, philosophical differences of combat (cut vs. thrust, etc.), dueling etiquettes, even empty-hands martial arts techniques (sample: "Kraut Control: How American GIs Were to Fight Sword-Wielding Axis Officers in World War II"), etc. In short, it is an interesting and educational read. The German-born author is considered one of the foremost experts on historical edged-weapons combat, and duelled with the saber as a member of a duelling fraternity in Germany. He now lives and works in the U.S. I do not know where to get a copy. Mine was a birthday present from a friend, jiu-jitsu master Hans Ingebretsen, of Kilohana and San Jose gasshuku fame. Thanks again, Hans. Jay de Leon --__--__-- Message: 4 From: Ray Terry To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Date: Sun, 09 Jun 2002 20:57:06 PDT Subject: [Eskrima] Experiment: Does size really matter? Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Does size really matter? Anyone have one of those punch/kick force meters handy??? IMO it would be interesting to compare the average strike force generated by a heavy rattan stick vs. a light rattan stick. Perhaps use the same length stick, but one a light weight rattan (3/4" to 7/8" thick, not so thin as to be flexible) and the other a heavy weight rattan (1.125" to 1.25" thick). It would be interesting to check if the angle of the strike or type of strike made a difference. i.e. a basic power forehand, basic power backhand, and a flip hit. Anyone already tried this little experiment? Or willing to try it and report back?
