I have met several instructors from the Philippines who were great at teaching one-on-one over time, but did not necessarily have a system that others could use to produce the same results. There are others I had a great time with, but I didn't see how the would be able to teach an uncoordinated beginning student. I would love to hear from others especially those that train in these systems. (p.s.. Thanks to the guy who wrote about and complimented GM Diego & Guro Tommy in Binondo-They are really great martial artist & instructors) I've met instructors & practitioners who are specialist (i.e.. fighting at Largo range & closing to stick-grappling only) but they might not teach a comprehensive system. I feel that fighting structures & systems are a whole different arena. IMO, the following systems are great for those looking for a comprehensive body of knowledge to learn & practice. Especially for those looking to dedicate several years just to their student phase. I've also met students & instructors from these systems & like what I have seen. Villabre-Largusa Kali- IMO, this system has become overly stylistic for those seeking a system for martial application. It is comprehensive though and there are top level instructors in the system who can use it and teach it as self-defense to their students. I don't know if this system includes stick grappling or a comprehensive corto game, but I have seen instructors in this system use those types of techniques. Inosanto-Lacost Blend- Because this system is headed by Guro Inosanto it will probably always be expanding. Others on the digest can say much more about the teaching method & learning process. Some of the most innovative practitioners and instructors come from this school. This is probably the most comprehensive system in terms of material covered. Lameco- P. Guro Sulite did the work so students could learn quickly and easily. The system is direct and to the point. IMO, it's one of the best systems for building competent martial artist. I hope more folks come forward to learn and propagate this great system. Good fighters are known to come out of this school. Pekiti-Tirsia Kali This is another great comprehensive system. Many top fighters have come out of this system including several Dog Brothers. Excellent system for blade work & the corto range. I love this systems structural alignments for close range evasion & power generation. (note: DBMA use these same basic movements as well) DBMA: Dog Brother Martial Arts- IMO, this group has done more to expand the knowledge base for ranges and fighting concepts than anyone else in recent years. In particular. I've seen few folks talk about stick-squared, outside circle, standing grapple, or ground fighting ranges of FMA (the exception being those systems that specialize in these things like dumog). It's a given that people come here to learn to fight and to spar hard. Corto Cadena Visayan Eskrima- IMO this system produces the best footwork for evasion and setting up an opponent especially for blade work. From what I have seen all of the above systems have developed great structures for learning in a classroom/seminar environment & even from videos. In contrast I believe Corto Cadena is best learned via private lessons. I would want to include Kali Ilustrisimo in this list, but from what I've seen so far is that it is missing a comprehensive structured empty hand component. Different KI instructors teach different things. GM Tony Diego does have impressive empty hand fighters though. I was impressed with how hard & fast Guro Tommy Tang could hit the heavy bag. Lastly even though it's note a FMA, but a IMA (as in Indonesian Martial Art), Silat Sera Serak under Pak Vic de Thours is definitely a complete and comprehensive martial art with highly developed learning structures. Things will be changing for me in 2.5 weeks. I have accepted an early retirement offer from HP. Friday, June 28 will be my HP retirement date. Why do you care? After June 28 any email addrs for me ending in hp.com, like this one, will cease to function. Please use rterry@idiom.com if you need to reach me via private email. What will I do? Enjoy the summer! It will be my first summer off in ~25 years. I'll probably travel, teach, train and get in a few week-or-so long bicycle trips. I'll also probably travel a bit around Europe and elsewhere teaching Inayan Eskrima seminars. A few months (years?) down the road maybe I'll get bored and look for another job. Time will tell. But never fear, the lists will continue to be up and functioning. I now return you to your regularly scheduled discussions.
