Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net >Anyone have one of those punch/kick force meters handy??? The question here is whether a punch/kick force meter would tell you anything meaningful. Throwing a 50 pound punching bag at the meter would probably give a nice reading, hitting it with a 16" ASP would not. OTOH, I'd prefer you throwing the bag at me. >IMO it would be interesting to compare the average strike force >generated by a heavy rattan stick vs. a light rattan stick. We train striking power with rattans sticks as well as axe handles, both in the same length. We use old rattan sticks tied together as tragets which are held by a partner. When holding such a target in your hands while someone else is beating the sh*t out of it, you really do feel the difference between strikes with a light and a heavy stick. >Perhaps use the same length stick, but one a light weight rattan (3/4" >to 7/8" thick, not so thin as to be flexible) and the other a heavy >weight rattan (1.125" to 1.25" thick). It would be interesting to check >if the angle of the strike or type of strike made a difference. i.e. a >basic power forehand, basic power backhand, and a flip hit. All hits with the heavy stick yield more power. The disadvantage of the heavy stick is that you have less speed in your attacks. In the end, you must balance speed and power, probably using a heavier stick the stronger you are. I think the Dog Bro's have also said this a few times. Further, its probably in the best interest of any practical art to include elements of other arts so as to more completely understand the realities of fighting. The arts that maintain the highest level of "purity" are probably the ones that are practiced more as sport...where the game is the main concern. The disadvantage of the heavy > stick is that you have less speed in your attacks. All I know is that F=MxA. I, and apparently you, assume that the heavier stick would strike with a greater force. But without a well formed experiment how do we move beyond assumption to fact? My assumption is based on being on the receiving end of more power strikes than you'd care to hear about, but that is not really a proper experiment. Anyone?
