In the 80's karate had its heyday among teens with KARATE KID (now do you wonder why it's always being shown on HBO and AXN Channel Asia?). In the 90's aikido had its hey day with Steven Seagal. When will FMA have its chance and not be featured as matter-of-factly has it always has been in some Hollywood films? I wish someone here who works in Hollywood would make a script similar to Karate Kid.....a Filipino American kid who's insecure meets an old Visayan World War II veteran "manong" who saves him from white bullies who love doing grappling and taekwondo and teaches him the bladed arts of his Filipino heritage. Then, there would be a sequel in which the old man and his new ward would have to go home to the Visayas and there the "Kali Kid" would figure in a no-armor, free-for-all "juego todo" type match. How's that versus Karate Kid's point system? :) ===== Earn $$ just by receiving and reading email! http://www.resource-a-day.net/member/index.cgi?Brandon96 Yahoo! - Official partner of 2002 FIFA World Cup http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "Don Edwards" To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Date: Sun, 16 Jun 2002 13:45:36 +0000 Subject: [Eskrima] 7th WEKAF Championships in London Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Check out www.WEKAF.com.. There is info on there.. I understand the event was on/off for awhile but is definitely on.. "Diony" Canete mentioned to me that he will be there conducting a seminar. The only way I know anything about this is through my instructor Master "Dong" Cuesta. There seems to be a lack of information concerning these events. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Mark Wiley indicates that Remy Presas produced 6 instructional tapes. I don't know when he wrote that article, but that statement is factually inaccurate. Prof Presas produced 7 videos in the 80's, then made 3 instructional tapes with Black Belt Magazine. Then, about a year or so before his untimely death, he made 15 tapes. So, he had made 25 instructional videotapes of the art of Modern Arnis. Probably just nitpicking but had to point this out. I maintain that since we Filipinos would rather listen to foreigners than to our own kind, it's high time that Guro Dan Inosanto come out with an updated edition of his book THE FILIPINO MARTIAL ARTS. Secondly, it would be simply wonderful if we have Americans and Europeans forming a series of official delegations to the Philippines and making representations with the government as well as performing demonstrations and tournaments featuring various FMA styles so that we Flips would take notice. One comment I have about Ray's division of FMA categories: Arnis in the north, Eskrima in the Visayas (center of the Philippines), Kali in the south. It's not accurate. For instance, Iloilo and Negros islands are in the center of the Philippines (exactly in the very heart of the Visayas region), but all the FMA styles there are called "arnis". Thus, we have Pekiti Tirsia arnis (before GT Gaje started calling it Kali), Lapu-Lapu arnis, Binas Dynamic Arnis, Tapado Arnis, Yaming Arnis, etc. Like I said in my earlier post, eskrima (or escrima) is used by cebuano-based or influenced FMA styles. And since most people in Mindanao are Cebuano immigrants (Mindanao being the southern part of the Philippines), they also use "eskrima" or "escrima". No one uses kali here except for the more educated arnisadors who want to emphasize the pre-Spanish roots of FMA. (Sort of like the Japanese changing karate or "Chinese hand" into karate or "empty hand" to deemphasize the Chinese roots thereof--the exact reverse of what we are trying to do here in the Philippines). Although there's a Kali-Kalihan festival in Negros Occidental's mountain areas, I'm not sure it's an authentic festival. It could have been a modern-day innovation merely inspired by arnis/kali practitioners. I still believe though, that there are some who'd call their brand of FMA "kali"--although they must be extremely rare. Otherwise, where did Placido Yambao get his information in the first ever book written on the FMA (and in Tagalog at that) "MGA KARUNUNGAN NG LARONG ARNIS"? And where did GM Villabrille get the impetus to call his style Kali? BTW, on the lighter side.........actor Matt Damon is going to do FMA in his movie THE BOURNE IDENTITY. A friend of mine has a cousin who taught Matt Damon some FMA for 1.5 hours every day while they were making the film. The teacher was a student of Guro Dan I. and was also a professional shootfighter in Japan, or so I heard. ===== Earn $$ just by receiving and reading email! http://www.resource-a-day.net/member/index.cgi?Brandon96 Yahoo! - Official partner of 2002 FIFA World Cup http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com --__--__-- Message: 7 From: Ray Terry To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Date: Sun, 16 Jun 2002 19:52:25 PDT Subject: [Eskrima] Terms Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net > One comment I have about Ray's division of FMA > categories: Arnis in the north, Eskrima in the Visayas > (center of the Philippines), Kali in the south. It's > not accurate. I agree. I've been needing to update the FAQ for a couple years now, but all I've been able to do is make small additions and corrections. My upcoming sabbatical should give me the time. Kuntao Silat is a term frequently used in the south, not Kali. The use of the term Kali seems to be a fairly recent development.
