In 1937, Benjamin Luna Lema founded the Lightning Arnis Club in Mambusao, Capiz. And in 1939, Doce Pares was joined by the six Canete brothers. With differences in political view, Bacon left and founded the Balintawak Self-Defense Club. Eulogio "Yoling" Canete became the new Doce Pares president. . . . According to Manong Ted Buot who trained and taught with and for GM Anciong Bacon. There was no Balintawak until after WWII. It was not until after the war that the surviving members got back together to reform the Doces Pares. And do to some political differences Anciong Bacon chose to not to continue with the Doces Pares. Ancoing Bacon Opened the Self-Defense Club on Balintawak Street of Cebu City. It became commonly known as the Balintawak Self-defense club. And when used in short, some would say "oh you study Balintawak" meaning the person had studied at the Self-Defense Club. The Club name did become the Balintawak Self Defense Club after a while. Just my knowledge passed to me verbally from Manong Buot. If it differs from what you have heard or is in error, please tell me what you know. Mark Ward sent me the URL for it: http://judoinfo.com/kimura2.htm Tom Meadows --------------------------------------------------- 20,000 people came to see the bout including President of Brazil. Helio was 180cm and 80kg. When I entered the stadium, I found a coffin. I asked what it was. I was told, "This is for Kimura. Helio brought this in." It was so funny that I almost burst into laughter. As I approached the ring, raw eggs were thrown at me. The gong rang. Helio grabbed me in both lapels, and attacked me with O-soto-gari and Kouchi-gari. But they did not move me at all. Now it's my turn. I blew him away up in the air by O-uchi-gari, Harai-goshi, Uchimata, Ippon-seoi. At about 10 minute mark, I threw him by O-soto-gari. I intended to cause a concussion. But since the mat was so soft that it did not have much impact on him. While continuing to throw him, I was thinking of a finishing method. I threw him by O-soto-gari again. As soon as Helio fell, I pinned him by Kuzure-kami-shiho-gatame. I held still for 2 or 3 minutes, and then tried to smother him by belly. Helio shook his head trying to breathe. He could not take it any longer, and tried to push up my body extending his left arm. That moment, I grabbed his left wrist with my right hand, and twisted up his arm. I applied Udegarami. I thought he would surrender immediately. But Helio would not tap the mat. I had no choice but keep on twisting the arm. The stadium became quiet. The bone of his arm was coming close to the breaking point. Finally, the sound of bone breaking echoed throughout the stadium. Helio still did not surrender. His left arm was already powerless. Under this rule, I had no choice but twist the arm again. There was plenty of time left. I twisted the left arm again. Another bone was broken. Helio still did not tap. When I tried to twist the arm once more, a white towel was thrown in. I won by TKO. My hand was raised high. Japanese Brazilians rushed into the ring and tossed me up in the air. On the other hand, Helio let his left arm hang and looked very sad withstanding the pain. --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Mon, 17 Jun 2002 10:50:30 +0100 (BST) From: jonbroster@another.co.uk To: eskrima digest < eskrima@martialartsresource.net > Subject: [Eskrima] RE: 7th WEKAF ? Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi, Given that I have adjudicated most of the WEKAF competitions in the UK for the last 5 or 6 years, I know precious little about the state of the WEKAF World Championship. The main problem seems to lie in the disintegration of what was formerly the largest group based here in the UK - Rapid Arnis - prompted, it seems, by my teacher's (Pat O'Malley) total inability to get on with anyone for any length of time. (I say this as a friend and loyal student) As I understand matters at the moment, the competition is being arranged by John James (formerly Rapid Arnis Bristol now Kapatiran Arnis) and will take place at the Elephant & Castle in London leisure centre. That is all I know. Is anyone coming? List members involved? I would love to know. But both were obviously tough customers. Mind you, I am not trying to start a "which art is better" thread here. A friend asked me this question with reference to the double-stick fight sequence done by Jeff Speakman in the movie "The Perfect Weapon". My exposure to the FMA is limited to my JKD training and I know nothing about the other arts as far as weapons are concerned, so I could not really give an answer to my friend. Also, is the "Defang the snake" concept truly unique to the FMA? Steven Johnson, 34, was wounded by officers before being charged with attempted murder following what marked the latest in a series of violent crimes in downtown Manhattan. He was carrying three loaded guns, 153 rounds of ammunition and a samurai sword when he approached four white people walking in the East Village on Sunday at about 2 a.m. and told them: "I have a problem with you," Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said. Johnson shot one of the men, Jonah Brander, in the upper body, followed him as he ran to the door of the bar and shot him again, police said. Johnson then entered the bar and ordered up to 40 patrons to the kitchen, police said. Shoji Iso, a 54-year-old Asian man who owns a store next to the bar, heard the shots and peeked in, and Johnson shot him in the wrist, police said. He then allegedly forced a woman to start putting plastic handcuffs on the hostages while he sprayed the crowd with kerosene and fired occasional shots at police cars outside. Witnesses told police that Johnson was "ranting about white people and vowed revenge for thousands of years of suffering." Johnson said that he was having "fun" and that "a real man chooses when he dies," Kelly said. After Johnson pulled out a fireplace lighter, Annie Hubbard and Ann Margaret Gidley, both of Manhattan, tackled Johnson, and he shot Hubbard in the leg, police said. Gidley, 23, told the Daily News that she knew she had to act. "It was do something or die," she said. "I didn't think it was time to go yet." Officers heard the shots and stormed the bar, grazing Johnson in the head with a bullet and taking him into custody 45 minutes after the ordeal began. "Those two women did the right thing, a very important thing ... they were very brave," Kelly said. The violence came just days after a burglar broke into two apartments in the Lower East Side on Wednesday and shot three people to death, including an 86-year-old man and his 88-year-old wife. In April, a man was shot in the face during a robbery attempt in Greenwich Village. Police said Johnson, who has AIDS, apparently wanted to be shot by police or to die in a fire, and left a suicide note for his 10-year-old son at his apartment. Johnson was charged with attempted murder and criminal possession of a weapon. He had not retained a lawyer; he was in stable condition at Bellevue Hospital Sunday evening and was unavailable for comment. There was no telephone listing for him at the address provided by police. The three victims were also taken to Bellevue. Brander, 28, of Fort Lee, N.J., was in serious condition Sunday; Hubbard, 34, and Iso were stable. Johnson had been despondent since his wife died in March, neighbors told investigators. He has an arrest record dating to 1985 that includes weapons violations, larceny and drug possession. Police who searched his Brooklyn apartment said they found a note taped to a wall that said, "Tell the boys in blue I won't be easy." --__--__-- Message: 8 From: BillyJa695@aol.com Date: Mon, 17 Jun 2002 17:15:02 EDT To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] FMA in the Phillipines Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Leo Salinel wrote: <<<>>> I have two questions for Leo and they're just out of curiosity.
