If it is, I would be surprised at the lack of interest in the FMA." Comment : If Arnis is indeed currently taught in the public school systems in the Philippines, that might have the opposite effect of promoting it. It will probably be perceived as "bakya" meaning for the common people, low-brow, therefore uncool. By the way, growing up in Manila in the Philippines, I saw pictures but never actually saw public school students in red pants and white camisa chino doing Arnis P.E. However, while in grade school, I danced the "sakuting," a Filipino dance with two sticks, and I wore red pants and white camisa chino as a costume (so did most of the male dancers in the other dances). (2) Leo Salinel implies that a book by a high-profile, American FMA artist (Dan Inosanto, etc.) might revive interest in FMA in the Philippines. I have the opposite request. I wish an author of note (Filipino or American) would write a comprehensive book on FMA with profiles of current grandmasters in the Philippines and their senior students--the Lemas, the Canetes, the Gajes and the Tortals, any more fighting Baets still living in Laguna, the Presases, whoever the remnants of "NARAPHIL" "Arnis Phil."etc. are, including my own Grandmaster Godofredo Fajardo, etc.? (3) In a previous thread, Elrik Jundis wrote about burgeoning silat schools in the Philippines, and I mentioned attending an international silat tournament in RP. When we say Filipino martial arts (FMA's) now, does that term include silat and kuntao schools belonging to Filipino silat federations? (4) Leo Salinel wrote of younger Filipinos in RP "...the younger generation (most of whom are still, like their elders, stuck in the early 90's and thinking that aikido is the ultimate martial art)..." Is that because of Steven Seagal's Hollywood influence? So are some still stuck in the Bruce Lee era? I am still stuck in the 70's era of Tony Ferrer and Roberto Gonzalez (shorin-ryu) and my old instructor Vic Vargas (judo). At present the URL mandemuda.com is being used by a porn website. This seems to me totally unreasonable (especially given Pak Herman's relatively recent death) and probably against internet rules whereby ownwers of URL need to be able to demonstrate a legitimate claim to the URL. Is there a Federal (in the US) or other governmental agency to which one can complain about this kind of abuse? If members of this list were to complain surely the minimum response of the agency involved would be to prevent the current misuse. Who should be contacted in this regard? I myelf studied it in high school. But the reason why people here don't like arnis or whatever you call it (FMA in general) is because of the poor packaging and marketing strategy--first of all, the styles of arnis we are shown look like karate with sticks and hence we are not impressed. We subconsciously think, "Even here in martial arts, we don't have any originality and have to copy stuff from Japan and impose our stick fencing on it". That's what we feel whenever we see anyos or sayaws that look like kata and where the practitioners were tacky red pants and white camisa de chino undershirts that further reinforce our own stereotypes of FMA'ers as backward hillbillies. Add to that the stances and hand positions that look like karate. And the practitioners here who wear and use belt ranking systems. I myself disdained FMA until I discovered Guro Dan Inosanto and PG Edgar Sulite's books. I realized that there was a "cool" and more authentic FMA culture here and abroad. Prof. Presas' burial wasn't publicized here. We Flips are too busy with politics and showbiz gossip. :( ===== Earn $$ just by receiving and reading email! http://www.resource-a-day.net/member/index.cgi?Brandon96 Yahoo! - Official partner of 2002 FIFA World Cup http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com --__--__-- Message: 4 From: Seraksatu@aol.com Date: Thu, 20 Jun 2002 20:01:39 EDT To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] New Serak Sambut Book Published Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Selamat All New Sambut book is Published Pentjak Silat Serak(tm) Sambut 1 -15 Volume 1 Larger size 8X11, easier reading and many Photos For now limited printing Pak Vic --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues are available via ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com.
