Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net <<< My assumption is based on being on the receiving end of more power strikes than you'd care to hear about, but that is not really a proper experiment. Anyone?>>> This would be the basis of my opinion also. That and seeing what various sticks did to those that I was playing with. I came to the conclusion early on that I would practice and play with the biggest, hardest, heaviest rattan stick that I could effectively wield. I have used a variety of hardwood sticks over the years and have broken nearly every type of hardwood that is commonly used in the FMAs. I have had and seen various sticks made out of bahi, kamagong, cocobolo, ironwood, and numerous other hardwoods break and shatter. Regardless of the type of wood that one uses I have found that if you soak them in boiled linseed oil then it seems to help preserve them somewhat under hard use. But other factors come into play when you engage someone with a stick, knife, gun, or empty hands. One of the factors would be the andrenaline level and pain tolerance of the person you hit, shoot, or cut. I have seen people take some really hard hits and it didn't seem to affect them whatsoever. And it isn't only the males that I've witnessed this in. I have seen both Kristi Strasburger and Jena Inay take hits that Mike Inay and I were sure would make them buckle but both of them continued on as if nothing had happened. I saw the same type of hits applied to a few males and the males buckled under the pressure and pain. I am sure that there are many on this board that go home after a workout only to discover a really large bruise and wonder how it got there. Another factor of course would be placement. Proper placement was always emphasized in my training and I am somewhat of a stickler for it when I am training people. This is one of the things that constant training with a De Cuerdas stick can help with. The ability to hit a moving target accurately and hard. In the end I don't think that the issue will ever be settled. It will be like the continual debate on pistol calibers. Having said that however most of the people that I have trained with have come to the same conclusion that I have, get there furstest with the mostest. :-) Take care, Rob McDonald --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues are available via ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com.
