It is 26 to 27 inches, 3/4 to 1 inches in dia. The handle is made of a 7 inhces wooden stick, same size as the normal ratten stick. The core is a flexible plastic rod with a spongy coated outside as shock absorber. The stick is covered by another plastic coating to give extra protection. The weight is around 200 to 250 grams. Last time, a guy from Australia brought some from us back for their own sparring use. I am not sure whether it will suit your tourement needs, if you like, please contact me, I can send you a VideoCD featuring my students sparring with our own padded sticks. gary Philippine Martial Art Federation (Hong Kong) www.arnis.com.hk --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Tue, 2 Jul 2002 22:31:01 -0700 (PDT) To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net From: eskrima-admin@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Ernie Franco Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net >videos that dealt with good basic knife stuff was >Ernie Franco's Defensive Edge. Martial Arts (DBIMA) I write with two invitations: 1) To our "Second Annual Dog Brothers Martial Arts Training Camp". The Camp is for 3 days (Thursday July 25 through Saturday July 27). For info go to http://www.dogbrothers.com/index1.htm and click away, and 2) To our "Summer 2002 Dog Brothers Gathering of the Pack" on Sunday July 28th. Both of these will take place in El Segundo at "The RAW Gym". see http://www.dogbrothers.com/07_02_Camp/hotelsandmap.htm Many of you remember our Gatherings in the park in Hermosa Beach. The years were spent there were very special, and that we could do what we do in a public park I believe is a powerful testimonial to what we (and that includes you) are about. Still, it was inevitable that sooner or later that problems would show up that we could not handle in the context of a public place. And so the Gatherings in the park in went on hold until we could find a suitable private property location. With the RAW Gym we have done so. RAW, headed up by Rico Chiapparelli, is a 8000 sq. ft. world class NHB facility with strong fighting spirit. Not many private property locations large enough and bold enough to be the site of a "Dog Brothers Gathering"! We tested out RAW at our first Training Camp last year, and then held our first Gathering since leaving the park last December with minimal spreading of the word. I am pleased with the results. From the beginning our Gathering have been about experimentation and growth. In the beginning, almost all fights were single stick (26-30 inches) against single stick. Then the sticks started getting bigger and heavier, double stick became part of the mix, grappling made its appearance years before the UFC, staff fights are now regularly seen, the knife fights have gone from rattan dowels to plastic and aluminum blades. Now there are many fights of unmatched weapons. All of these steps have been about growth. And now from the open spaces of the park we go indoors. The Gatherings at the Park in Hermosa Beach were the first Saturday of May and the Saturday of September that fell closest to the autumnal equinox (9/21). Now that we hold them at the RAW Gym, they will be on Sundays so as to facilitate parking issues. There will be one in the summer. (This year the date chosen was atypical for a variety of reasons) and one the Sunday before Thanksgiving. We choose this new custom so that those who come to our annual Training Camp from far away (we have people who come from Europe, Canada, and throughout the US) can save on travel expenses by combining the Camp with attending or fighting at a "Dog Brothers Gathering". DETAILS: If you want to fight at the Gathering you MUST MUST MUST pre-register. http://www.dogbrothers.com/07_02_Camp/07_29_02_fighterform.pdf The form is on the website. (My wife Cindy Prettykitty@dogbrothers.com 310-540-6853 handles all matters pertaining to Fighter Registration as well as Registration for the DBMA Training Camp). She and our two week old daughter Summerlin would appreciate your taking care of this promptly and not leaving it to the last minute!) There will be a table with T-shirts and videos at special DB Gathering prices. To cover the cost of the facility, there will be a $10 cover charge at the door for the Gathering. ABSOLUTELY NO VIDEO. This will be enforced. The Magic Words: "No judges, no referees, no trophies. One rule only: Be Friends at the end of the day. This means our goal is that no one spends the night in the hospital and that everyone leaves with the IQ with which they came. However, only you are responsible for you. Stickfighting is dangerous and injuries will happen. Protect yourself at all times. No suing no one for no reason for nothing no how no way. This includes members of the audience as well. We Filipinos have been very affected by the 300 years of Spanish feudal attitudes implanted in our culture. Just like the Spaniards in 1898 in Manila; they chose to surrender to the Americans even though it was the Filipino revolutionary army of General Emilio Aguinaldo that had surrounded Manila and forced them to capitulate...why? Because they disdained the idea of "surrendering" to small, snub-nosed, dark, smelly mere "indios" or natives. After more than 400 years, we Flips still haven't really learned.... :( The coolest martial arts among the younger generation here in Metro Manila are Brazilian Jujitsu, Taekwondo, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, and Aikido (we're hopelessly stuck in the early 90's era of Steven Seagal movies). It's so hard to get people into FMA. In my attempts to promote FMA among my peers, they almost invariably gave me a shrug and a tolerant smile, coupled with a polite no to my invites. ===== Earn $$ just by receiving and reading email! http://www.resource-a-day.net/member/index.cgi?Brandon96 Sign up for SBC Yahoo! Very interesting, but a few months ago I was training with one of my friends who happened to crack my Kumagong stick, the crack ran along the whole length of the stick. Kumagong being the soft wood that it is, is probably not a very good measure ....;-)  Perhaps the drunks in the states are a much tougher breed than the drunks in Australia. - Assuming that you are in the states. I do agree that a drunk generally has a much higher threshold of pain tolerance - depending on the person and how drunk they are, but I really think you missed my point.  >I was taught by Masters Mike Inay and Max Sarmiento that no fight >should last longer than 7 seconds. At the end of that time the opponent >should be on the ground and CANNOT get up. Oh by the way are you asking me who I trained with? Suro's dad never really learned his family style as, according to Suro, he didn't see the sense given the availablity of firearms. This may also fit in with the current thread on the popularity of Eskrima/Arnis in the RP. What little Suro did know of the 3-stick Inay family style was that the third stick was held between the two arms, resting in the crook of the elbows. He would give short demos based on what little his father recalled from his childhood. Of course, he/Suro was always upset that his dad hadn't learned the family art.
