As a US-raised Filipino, FMA caught my interest at a young age when my uncle gave me a book on GM Presas' Modern Arnis. And when I had the opportunity to live in the Philippines during my hs and college years, I was determined to learn some Arnis/Kali/Escrima. But at the time, Combat Aikido, Yaw-Yan, Tae Kwon Do, Shotokan Karate, Wushu, were the favorite arts to learn. Simply, because they were foreign. As a result, a great majority of the FMA masters and GMs relocated abroad to teach their arts. And it became difficult to seek FMA instructors within the Metro Manila area. However, FMA has found incredible success in the US and other countries. Ironically, I learned more FMA abroad than I had previously in the Philippines. My hats are off to all practitioners keeping FMA alive abroad and to those struggling to promote them back home. Opportunities await those that seek them. Nolan S. You are talking about $45 a stick. But for full contact sparring very little padding on your body is required. I knew as soon as that post hit the digest that there would inquiries, since the use of three sticks is a little foreign to the readers. I had decided to defer all questions to either you, Rob, or Steve Klement, since you three knew Suro Mike far better than I did, and probably saw more of this style than I got to see. However, the brief demo he gave us was exactly as you said...with the third stick lying crossways in the crook of the arms, while wielding sticks in both hands. Mike said that the stick held in the crook of the arms was a reserve weapon, in case one was lost. I assume from this statement by Mike that his family art was based on a Sinawali-type methodology? Many of the instructors are or were full time instructors of other martial arts systems, some are LEO’s, or in the military etc. Sayoc Kali is affiliated with anyone who wishes to study the Sayoc Kali edged weapons system. Whether they can kick, grapple, box, shoot, western fence, or even FMAs instructors in other systems - if they want to become instructors or learn more about Sayoc Kali they are more than welcome. All that is required is a good attitude, willingness to learn and dedication. I hope that helps. Um, yeah. Take a complete novice, coach them that way, and you may have a competent intermediate student, or a well groomed mid-range competitor (or someone burned out from over-training....), but a legit black belt? On the other hand, you could get rich offering a one-month live-in special... Or, more slightly more realistic, say the student trains 10 hours/week (probably more than a few on this list do just that!) ready to promote in half a year? cut to 5 hours a week; just over a year? interesting thought.
