Should written notes be taken during the seminar, or should a voice ativated hand held tape recorder be used, or should notes be taken after the seminar, if at all? Just wondering what people find to be the most effective to get the most out of an intensive seminar in the long run. I am curious on what students find to be the most beneficial, and what the instructors would like to see participants do. --__--__-- Message: 2 To: Date: Thu, 4 Jul 2002 23:55:04 +0100 From: eskrima-admin@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Payong Sumbrada Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi Gat Puno, Kumasta? I still haven't made it out to Paete yet to train with the teachers you recommended, but hopefully in about March or April I'll be there. Thanks for your response on the origins and purpose of Payong Sumbrada. The instructors who have influenced me greatly over these past years also define the drill as you do. I posed the question because after looking at various FMA discussion forums on the net, I realized that this drill had been the subject of great debate - whether it was to do with it's effectiveness as a training aid, the progressions used or it's origins. There seemed to be so many opinions on it from practitioners from a variety of styles, that I wondered how all these different systems come to practice the same exercise. I was also interested to see just how many various answers there would be as to it's origins. One I had read claimed that his instructor, a noted American Eskrimador, had invented it but neglected to provide any further information. The box I was referring to in my description relates to the blocking methods used i.e. defending the head, left and right sides, and the low line (similar to four corner blocking in some Chinese arts). I also relate it to keeping the blocks tight so as not to extend the arms or the ribs more than necessary. Thanks once again for taking the time to respond. It takes too much time to write them down. For me, that time is better spent actually doing the material and trying to get my body to remember some of it. Another problem (for me) with written notes is that, a week later I have trouble decipher them. The only time I have taken written notes successfully was to wait until the break (for lunch or end of session) and jot down a quick list of reminders of what we did ... not trying to notate the actual technique, just a reminder phrase of some sort. For me, the best method of taking notes is video. After the seminar, I grab a friend (preferably one who attended the seminar with me so we can feed off of each other's memory) and to video tape myself doing the material that I (we) remember. As I record the video, I talk through it ... mention places I feel I'm having trouble, mention things that I can't remember but want to ask about later or watch for at later seminars. Video of myself is the only note-taking I've ever had any success with.
