In Manila there is a shop in the Virra Mall in Greenhills called Squadron Shop (I think that is the right spelling) which had plenty of good (& cheap) stuff when I was there last year. I also bought some really nice hardwood sticks from the shop in the open prison in Puerto Princessa in Palawan!! Even before Sep 11 they would not let you carry a stick in hand luggage on a domestic flight, they make you check them in separately from your other luggage and collect them from the firearms reclaim point. Note taking is a very important piece of anyone's training. It gives you a record of what you have done, and a method to look back and see what was successful in your training, sparring matches and even fights you may have had. When going through college, note taking could make or break your grade point average, why stop now? If you want to excell at an even better rate notes are the way to go. Note taking is only as good as you reviewing them, practicing from them and even using them as a guide to change bad practices in your training. I encourage all of my students constantly to take notes. In private classes I also allow them to film for future reference. I have many tapes of various seminars, camps and classes as a reference for my own training. I like the tape recorder idea, I use to have one of those micro cassette ones in the 80's and 90's, but now I find it easier to just write down what I have done or seen, right away instead of transcribing later. My outline for note taking: 1) Write out what you have done as soon as you can. 2) A short time later review it, and add any changes that have come to mind 3) Practice from your notes and see if it makes sense to you, and again refine your notes. In a seminar, ask someone to partner with you and also takes notes, two sets of eyes and minds are better than one! Train hard it is the Way! Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Anyone know of any good bookstores in Manila? I've been to some National Bookstores, but if you know of any exceptional ones, including the locations of the better National Bookstores, I would like to know. I was only able to get books on Ernesto Presas's style of arnis, which is pretty impressing, but I also would like a lot more diversity (though all four books I got about him are awesome). Thanks. --__--__-- Message: 5 To: Date: Tue, 9 Jul 2002 19:25:43 +0100 From: eskrima-admin@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Sticks in Manila Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi Erwin, Regarding your question about where to buy sticks in manila. There is a shop in Greenhills called Squadron Shoppe ( their spelling! ) and it’s a goldmine. It has everything an Eskrima practitioner could want. Rattan, Bahi, Kamagong, Molave, protective equipment etc etc. I purchased some gear there last year and the padded sticks are the best I’ve used in 10 years. They were around £4.00 each. Kamagong and Bahi were / are about £6.00 each. Don’t worry too much about the “Kamagong is an endangered species..” talk. It’s just hype put out by distributors in the west to justify their inflated ( in some cases extortionate ) charges. I was under this impression too, but if you go around the malls there, like SM. you’ll see all the usual “touristy” gifts and most of it is made from Kamagong. Anyway the address is as follows: Squadron Shoppe, unit SF – 102 Langka Lane, 2nd Floor Virramall, Greenhills, San Juan, Metro Manila. Check out the impressive catalogue of videos there too. They have nearly every title you can think off and many that are for the Philippine market only. Again, when I was there they worked out to £5.00 per title and take a few days to “acquire”. There was another place, a Bamboo and Rattan merchants in the market at Balintawak that I was told on good authority was worth checking out but never made it. I hope this has been of some help. They are either illegible a day or two late or don.t always make sense, or while I am busy writing, I miss other important things. I find that using a small micro cassette recorder to speak into eliminates many problems and is faster that trying to wtop and write down techniques. Consider, however, that it may be possible to safely use greater force with the open hand than with the fist for reasons that you've already mentioned: wrist (in)stability " Furthermore, theoretically the force actually delivered should be greater, as eliminating the instability of the wrist joint also eliminates a major source of a "power leak", at least in the palm-heel thrust. On the other hand, there is a loss of 4-6" of effective reach which is something that takes a while getting used to when switching from fist-punching. The distance adjustment also applies to a simple slap. For some reason I tended to hit more with the fingers which is not only ineffective but also hurts. Looking at the book The Complete Iron Palm by Brian Grey I do not seem to be the only one making this mistake. OTOH, I wonder if anyone has any anecdotes relating to hand injuries doing the palm-heel strike?
