The article was entitled "Take Note" and throughly detailed my techniques for maximum retention of seminar material. At that time I had been with Guro Inosanto for five years and the material I presented were my own techniques for absorbing the astonishing volume of material that he presented in a typical class. Virtually every suggestion that has come up on the digest was included in the articel and quite a bit more. It probably is in the Martial Arts Training magazine archives (Rainbow Publications ...Black Belt magazine, et al). The only reason I mention it, is that following its publication, a ban of tape recording of Guro Dan's Seminars was established, and many other instructors soon followed this lead and generally outlawed videotaping as well: The video ban was well on its way, in any event. So you have me to thank for the elimination of the tape recording of seminars. What is scary to me is that I wrote it ten years ago.... He is a Malay and asked me if I knew what Malaysian silat Dan Inosanto has learned and teaches. The Indonesian styles are all well publicised - Serak, Mande Muda as is the FMA stuff, but what comes from Malaysia? They will even deliver your order to you if you are short on time and don't want to brave the Manila traffic. You can also call them at 78-56-95. There prices are good as well. If you know someone or can pass for a local you might also try the army surplus shops in Quiapo on Quezon Blvd. Not far from the Quiapo Church. If you look like a foriegner they will jack up the prices though. One dealer though Johhny Rollon 47-24-51 specializes in martial arts supplies and can make uniformes, custom weapons, and bags for you. As for Bookstores try the Filipinana Bookstore in Glorrieta Mall in Makati. It's outside to the left on the Southern exit. Also try the bookstore in the Rockwell/Powerplant mall in Makati. It looks like a smaller version of a Borders Bookstore. My role is to attack the students (ala Peyton Quinn ) with empty hands, sticks, knives, etc. I would like to wear some protective equipment, but cannot afford a bulletman, or redman suit. I was thinking about boxing headgear and some muay thai padding, and baseball shin guards. My biggest concern is for my head (broken nose, teeth, and whiplash) and groin (obvious), as I will probably be taking alot of shots to both. Has anyone used the padded attacker stuff before? Are there any alternatives to the suits that cost $1000.00 or more? Anyway, Mike Sayoc, is Tuhon Sayoc's brother and his lineage stems from him. Mike Sayoc teaches Sayoc Kali, and is teaching the Sayoc Fighting System components. More information on the Sayoc Fighting System can be found in the FAQ section on the Sayoc.com site. Tuhon Christopher Sayoc is and has been the head of the Sayoc Kali organization since his Father GM. Bo Sayoc gave him that position, all rank certificates etc, will have Tuhon Sayoc's name on them(somewhere). So,some of the differences would be that Tuhon Sayoc, focuses on "all blade, all the time" and teaches the methods out of the Sayoc Fighting system to those who want to learn them. While Mike Sayoc, is teaching more of the Sayoc Fighting system components.(Sayoc Fighting System has a whole range of stick work etc.)Tuhon Felix Cortez gave an awesome demonstration of the Sayoc Fighting System with Battang Tuhon Jimmie Sayoc at the recent Sama-Sama event in Hazleton Pa. I don't have the exact adress here but I will be in Manila next week and can send you their adress then as well as well as those of the bigger National Bookstores. You can also try powerbooks in the Glorietta mall in Makati ( I found a nice book on Moro Swords there), and I think there should be some good bokshops in the Megamall. As the Sayoc clan no doubt knows, it includes the blade component in addition to the other typical components of a Eskrima/Kali system. Antidote: Use your hips and save your tips... Last spring we " the team" were teaching a group of victims-survivors of abuse. Part of TAO SDA program covers palm heal strikes. Both of the Male instructors that were teaching this course with the team had the opportunity to demonstrate and teach the palm heal strike to the woman of the class. The majority of power to this strike does not come from the hand, bone, wrist or arm. it dose not come from the shoulder nor any part of the upper torso. If the strike is done correctly its hard to hurt your fingers or hands. The power to this simple strike comes from the hips. Something woman have the advantage on and why it can and does suit us. Furthermore, Using the hips is a more natural movement for the female body then the male body. As the Male instructors of our team demonstrated the strike, I watched then closely, they did not teach the strike using the hips. throughout the years i have watched men do this strike and many of them do not pull the power for the strike from the hips. i have seen hurt fingers and over extend arms, elbows and shoulders and not having the reach as well from not doing so. Without the hip rotation and pivot, the palm strikes that the students were producing were weak and at times sloppy. After about 5 minutes of them working on the strike incorrectly, I re-demonstrated the strike to them Myself, "including to my male counterparts as part of the team". In about 5 minutes of practicing, my students palm strikes were more precise, balanced, came with considerably more power to the strike and without injury to the arms, neck, hands, finger tips or shoulders.
