The cheapest sticks in Manila can be found at the underside of the Quiapo bridge, but be very careful if you're a Caucasian as the local theives and muggers might try to rob you. Bahi, yakal, kamagong and rattan sticks, plus a few blades sold occasionally, are there for the picking. IMHO, Ernesto Presas' books at the National Bookstore are one major factor why younger Filipinos won't take up arnis/kali/escrima, since the way it looks to them from those books, FMA is just "karate with sticks" and doesn't look practical. I remember a greater resurgence of interest in FMA in the early 90's when bootleg versions of Guro Dan INosanto's book THE FILIPINO MARTIAL ARTS (or reprints allowed legally under P.D. 229) were sold at National bookstore along with PG Edgar Sulite's books. ===== Earn $$ just by receiving and reading email! http://www.resource-a-day.net/member/index.cgi?Brandon96 Sign up for SBC Yahoo! I thoroughly enjoyed reading the FAQ and was impressed with the amount of detail about Tuhon Chris Sayoc's fighting system. Although it is just a FAQ, I would consider the FAQ as an advanced reading for FMArtists who want to develop their skills. To quote the FAQ, the FAQ is the first indication that "knife fighting is a brain game". I recommend that all students of the FMA's visit your site and learn! One Sunday he asked me what my preferred hand striking method was, i.e., fist, palm, etc. I answered "the palm", including that it is easy to go from palm strikes to grabbing/tearing actions. He smiled and sadi "Smart." Looking at everything that we -can- do, I just try to do what makes the most sense to my humble intellectual abilities. I've injured my wrists before in striking heavy/hard bags with fists, full power. Doing the same with palms has only been limited by how much sting to the hands I can stand. Another advantage to using open hands is the flexibility of application. We have a little more leeway with how the hand must be placed on impact when using the palmar surface than with using the knuckles. Palm striking is just more natural. Yah, you gotta get a little closer to la problema, but your attack can be more fluid and adaptable/elusive ... well worth the effort required to develop IMHO. My brother-in-law once showed the decisive potentials of palm strikes ... he sat a guy on his duff with one palm smack to the chest. Put him down with apparently little effort ... bam, done. No fight. Caused the guy to collapse on the spot. It was a very relaxed move and the line-of-drive was clearly diagonally downward ... picture that the guy was in the way of bor-in-law's attemp to smack something on a desk or table that the guy was leaning his duff against. Reminds me of advice to punch downward on a rear straight (cross) to the chest and upwards on "uppercut" to midsection ... sit him down or pick him up. I would go with palm to chest, punch to midsection. New thoughts on combination you have now, 'ey?:-) Mitakuye Oyasin. A small group of us are planning a visit to the PI and planning our itinerary. Do you know what quality or type of swords or weaponry is for sale at the Squadron shoppe? Basically we want to pick up some less common commercialized stuff. Anyone you want us to give your regards let me know. You can send me info at email below. Thanks again, Guro Dexter email dexter@bahalana.com ========= Subject: [Eskrima] Sticks & Bookstores in Manila Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Squadron Shoppe is the best place to pick up stuff in Manila if you are visiting for a short time. They will even deliver your order to you if you are short on time and don't want to brave the Manila traffic. You can also call them at 78-56-95. There prices are good as well. If you know someone or can pass for a local you might also try the army surplus shops in Quiapo on Quezon Blvd. Not far from the Quiapo Church. If you look like a foriegner they will jack up the prices though. One dealer though Johhny Rollon 47-24-51 specializes in martial arts supplies and can make uniformes, custom weapons, and bags for you. As for Bookstores try the Filipinana Bookstore in Glorrieta Mall in Makati. It's outside to the left on the Southern exit. Also try the bookstore in the Rockwell/Powerplant mall in Makati. It looks like a smaller version of a Borders Bookstore. Hopefully my request for same on the Chris Sayoc System will also be submitted shortly. What better way for others to learn about the various FMA systems. FWIW, the Mike Sayoc group has indicated that Mike and Chris were students together under their father(and perhaps GT Leo Gaje?). According to them, Mike was not a student of Chris'. I understand that Mike has a great whip...
