The FAQ section on the Sayoc site is a very good way of starting to get an understanding of what we practice. Did you check out the Media section? There is a great clip of GM. Gaje and Tuhon Chris Sayoc practicing up there. The differences between the two systems all stems from the same starting point, the Sayoc Fighting System. Both Tuhon Sayoc, and Michael Sayoc were students of Grand Master Gaje and students of their father Grand Master Bo Sayoc, and a variety of other FMA masters. The Sayoc family home was a gathering point for many notable masters in the 70’s. Michael Sayoc was probably the first to use a bull whip in a demonstration/tournament (way back when), and is a fantastic whip practitioner, as well as a great Kali Instructor. Mike Sayoc’s lineage is outlined at www.angelfire.com/tn2/fightingarts/kali.html. I am currently in the process of putting together a FAQ on Sayoc Kali to add to the FMA section. It should be done by next week (I hope!). Guru Dan Inosanto has a website, or better yet visit his school and ask him. Or he visits many of schools during the year, ask the man who founded the art. Pak Vic From: eskrima-admin@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] MaPhilIndo Silat Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi I was just thinking about something one of my instructors asked me. He is a Malay and asked me if I knew what Malaysian silat Dan Inosanto has learned and teaches. The Indonesian styles are all well publicised - Serak, Mande Muda as is the FMA stuff, but what comes from Malaysia? If someone could help a beginner here...what is the difference between Pentjak Silat and Pencak Silat? My martial arts school has asked me to do some research on Pentjak Silat for cross-training purposes. Could someone reccomend a good Pentjak Silat school/teacher in Los Angeles? Thank you. -Brooke Thomas Hapkido Blend --__--__-- Message: 4 To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Date: Fri, 12 Jul 2002 13:56:33 -0400 From: eskrima-admin@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] fist or palm? Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Lately there's been a discussion ongoing about which is prefered, palm striking or punching with the fists.  I think the choice has to come more on the fly, depending on your opponent.  Using the palm spreads the surface area of contact, thus reducing the damage done, if not the force of the blow.  A punch, however, if you are striking with the first two knuckles, is more focused and a sharper blow.  I have found that when you are fighting a bulkier opponent, a punch seems to drive in through their muscle or cusion, where as a palm heel delivered to a slimmer adversary has alot more driving action behind it.  Thus if you intend to do damage, a punch seems more effective, while a palm has alot more stopping power, so to speak.  But on the other hand, no matter what, I try to keep my knuckles clear of striking objects like the skull or hips of anyone.  I do realise that each has it's own application for it's own situation, and I'm sure my best punch is weak compared to alot of guys' palm strikes, but for me, that's how I differentiate the two.
