I went to the Yaw Yan place in Pasay City because their temple in Shaw is closed for the moment. Has anyone here trained in it? Could anyone tell me about it? Seemed very interesting and Grandmaster Nap was very nice to me, having fun with my bad Fil-Am Tagalog. Very intense guys from what I reckon. All of 'em have burned tattoos on their chests and arms. Anybody see 'em in action live? If I had more time I would train, but he won't let me train for less than 45 days. I understand - he don't want his name on a student who hasn't gained his fundamentals. Smart man. Also, I want to know if anyone knows any bullwhip makers/sellers in the Philippines? That's something else I'd like to get here because its cheap. Again, thank you all for your help. Hopefully if it doesn't flood tommorrow I'll get to see guys at the Laguna? What happens if it rains anyway? Same thing, different spelling. Pentjak is the older colonial era way. Pencak is how it came out after post-independence language reforms. >My martial arts school has asked me to do >some research on Pentjak Silat for cross-training purposes. Could someone >reccomend a good Pentjak Silat school/teacher in Los Angeles? Thank you. Two of the de Thouars brothers, Paul and Victor, have schools in the LA area Cass Magda's school is in Reseda. Mande Muda is well-represented though I don't know exactly where. Guro Dan Inosanto's school does a lot of Silat. There's almost certainly more. --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Sat, 13 Jul 2002 13:58:11 EDT To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net From: eskrima-admin@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] What Inosanto teaches Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Jon, Guru Dan refers to his Malaysian Silat as "Bersilat". I'm not sure of the names of any sub-systems. -Steve Kohn --__--__-- Message: 4 To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Date: Sun, 14 Jul 2002 0:32:27 -0400 From: eskrima-admin@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Silat in LA Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net definitely check on Guru Cliff Stewart, technical advisor for Pendekar Paul DeThouars system in the valley--heck he is worth the drive from anywhere in the LA area. I flew in from Georgia. He can be contacted at 310-497-1608 after Tuesday. When I refer to palm strikes, palm heel is the least of my interests. There are many ways of hitting and many ways to do damage, not all of which has to be superficial. When I think of striking using the palms, it's oriented towards the center of the palm, not the heel. This can be concussive or shearing. Concussive palm strikes supposedly cause more internal damage. There's also striking like "willow palm", a forward strike with the hand held in position like what you'd see in a Chinese broadsword or short staff exercise. The fingers are off-line behind each other so that they don't crash into each other on impact. Good for strikes to the shoulder joint, e.g., to counter a hooking punch. Hollow, concussive palm can drop into the same area. Palm heel orientation is more extended than the types of strikes I was thinking about. Think "natural". __________________________________________________________________ Your favorite stores, helpful shopping tools and great gift ideas. I did a short review of the stick training which is probably still in the ED archives.
