I think this is a great chance to meet some people on the list and perhaps even hit them with a stick or two. The camp was divided into a weekend seminar, and then the week long camp. We worked a lot on Tuhon Gaje's Tri-V formula, focusing a good deal on combat/sparring applications. Lots of work developing power and speed (and learning to deal with it!), with much appreciated work on the largo applications. Once we'd closed in we started practicing some of the dumog leg takedowns - and as I was unable to transfer any of this stuff into readable note form, i'm going to have an even harder time translating it now! The double knife was a blast! The seminar was very well structured. We continued to develop on the previous days work. You could tell Gaje was really pushing for us to improve on the spot as opposed to gawking and taking notes! Thank you Tuhon Phillip for hosting this incredible event! The Gelinas Academy worked into being the perfect training grounds. We were stocked with sparring gear, space and I know many appreciated the wrestling mats on the one half of the gym when the dumog started to really heat up! And for those camping out, I'm sure they made decent beds :) The grand finale was one hell of a sparring session.. I think 90% of the people attending got up and banged (and 100% for the double knife sparring!). Nothing like group pressure to get the sparring sessions roaring! Great to have Guro Loki (thanks for the beating!!! Can't wait for next time!), Edwin, Chris et all from the Vancouver school who got me into this fun :) And mucha props to Pappy Dog for establishing some dog brothers style action in Loki and Nicks first knife sparring round, which of course continued into just about every matchup thereafter! Oh man I got hit in the head, so pardon me for forgetting everyone elses name in attendance, but people showed up from all over - California, texas, new york. It was amazing to see this many qualified stick swingers in one room! We all left with weathered, or torn hands depending on how many rolls of tape ya went through! Totally inspired, and anticipating the return of Tuhon Gaje next year? I sure hope so! O. Hey is that Guro Steve from Denver? Ya might remember me from a number of years back at a Dionisio Canete seminar - I was the fresh meat from Vancouver who jumped into the sparring sessions and knocked out a finger :) _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Fri, 19 Jul 2002 20:03:34 -0700 (PDT) To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net From: eskrima-admin@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Pekiti-Tirsia Kali in Metro Manila Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Elrik Jundis mentioned that there was indeed a Pekiti Tirsia group in Metro Manila, Philippines (not exactly in the city of Manila itself), but that people would be "better off training in Bacolod, Negros Occidental with Grand Tuhon Leo Gaje". I do not dispute the fact that it's better to go to the source of the water and drink, than to proceed to the faucets to which the source sends its water, but do I detect a hint of a slur here? Any axe to grind against my teachers and fellows here in Manila, Mr. Jundis? Did Prof. Bot Jocano have anything to do with this? FYI, my teachers in Pekiti-Tirsia kali here in Metro Manila are the very first Manila students of Grand Tuhon Leo Gaje after he came back from the USA and they train regularly with him whenever he's here in town. They have very good sparring and fighting reputations both in the FMA community (as well as a highly "pedigreed" lineage, so to speak in FMA) as well as in the amateur NHB and reality-oriented martial arts community here in Metro Manila (Brazilian Jujitsu, Sari-an [a local streetfighting style corresponding to Krav Maga], and Yaw-Yan). I'd take them anytime over the more publicized ones here in the metropolis, who are usually more of "packaging" than real "packing". My teachers and their (our) fellows are quite secretive though since they are professionals who stand to lose their licenses should they get into real scrapes they could very easily have passed/done without. Although it wouldn't hurt to seek them out and to cross-train once in a while with them, should they deem it okay given their schedules and other priorities. I hope Mr. Jundis didn't mean to say that they were lousy people or lousy arnisadors. ===== Earn $$ just by receiving and reading email! http://www.resource-a-day.net/member/index.cgi?Brandon96 Yahoo!
