Skirmish? Not exactly. It was just paraphrased by the first FMA historicists into "skirmish". Arnis has always been considered part of the local schools curriculum here in Manila. The problem is, kids won't touch it with a long pole because to them it's "bamboo fencing with clickety clack clack cadence" that's impractical and useless. When they go to the bookstores and see FMA books they see arnis styles that look like "karate with sticks". And they think, what the hell, we'll just study taekwondo or karate. Or even aikido. It's thus essential that we show them true traditional arnis/kali/escrima that doesn't follow Japanese martial art models or paradigms. Somethings like Kali Ilustrisimo, Pekiti Tirsia, Lameco, Balintawak escrima, De Campo 1-2-3 Orehinal, and similar styles. ===== Earn $$ just by receiving and reading email! http://www.resource-a-day.net/member/index.cgi?Brandon96 Yahoo! The fights are 3 rounds, with points awarded for strikes to various parts of the body. We saw many fights, and several different styles of fighting during the afternoon. Most of the strikes were to the hands, arms and feet, which were worth one point each, but during the day, there were several headshots taken. Even with all the strikes to the hands and forearms, there was only one disarm all day, and to me, it looked more like a slip than an actual disarm. The fighters all seemed very aware that they might be hit in the head, and thus tended to keep their distance and position for opportunities. One head shot was a flywheel strike that hit the forehaed and scraped down along the nose. Only the fighter's quick reactions saved him from a very nasty blow to the top of his head. Another semi-serious blow was taken by a fighter, who was hit in the right eye. He appeared to be OK at the end of the day, though his face around the eye was very swollen. He could see, so hopefully there was no permanent damage. Interestingly enough, one fighter used what we might call the caveman style, with his stick held high above his head. Daniel Baet (the older brother of the list's Gat Puno Baet) told me that they called that style the San Miguel Style! The only negative on the day was the weather. Within the last 2 weeks, 3 or 4 typhoons have either hit Luzon or come close, and the weather was just horrible. Pouring rain, flooding and generally miserable conditions made for a nasty trip in an open jeep, with a roof but no sides! With any luck, you didn't do any permanent damage to your heart when you wrote it. That said, I think you seriously misunderstood my point (which I've already sort of lost interest in). I just think that patterns are only a means to an end and not an end in themselves (trite...but true in my opinion). In fact, I preach the importance of patterns and I would not be at all surprised if we practiced many of the same things. I just think that a pattern like Hubud, for example, is fairly lifeless until the variables are introduced. I would hate to be put in the same category as a certain guy in the Pacific Northwest who condemns all patterns as "dead", The funny thing, by the way, about Pacific Northwest Guy is that he claims to have deep respect for Guro Inosanto, a man who is as great as he is as a result of practicing the same "dead" patterns he condemns. Condemning patterns in Escrima is tantamount to advising an aspiring musician to not learn scales (very dead patterns) and to just "play music". Kind of silly. I'm actually on your side. Be safe in your training. -Steve Kohn --__--__-- Message: 5 To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net (Eskrima) Date: Sat, 27 Jul 2002 08:51:15 -0700 (PDT) From: eskrima-admin@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Arnis vs. Eskrima Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Back on the Eskrima comes from the spanish word esgrima thread... What about the word Arnis? Isn't it from the Spanish word for harness??? i.e. Arnes Ray Terry rterry@idiom.com --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues are available via ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com.
