From: Andrew R Breton Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi Ray, I have some familiarity. Feldenkrais is very much unlike other "exercises". Usually, an exercise consists of a direction to do an action, often an ordinary one from an ordinary position, and paying attention to how your body moves. Often, there will be some intervening exercise (often to just one side of the body) and then you back to the original movement and see how it has changed by comparing it to the previous attempt of to the other side of the body. It's unlike lifting, stretching etc. in that awareness, rather than strength or flexibility, is the goal. For example, a Feldenkrais exercise might be to rotate your body, pointing with your finger to the spot you can reach. The teacher may ask you to note how your knees, hips, opposite shoulder, head etc. move to contribute to the movement. The interventing exercise may be to rotate as before, but with your head rotating in the opposite direction. When you go back to the original exercise, you may notice that you can rotate further and/or more easily. A lot of the exercises can be much more intricate than that and hard to learn fromthe internet or a book. Also, in person you aren't given the conclusion, so it's more experiential learning. I'm up on this because I happened to pick up a recording of a Feldenkrais seminar at half price books. As for effectiveness, it's almost impossible to quantify awareness so it's hard to study. There are some Esalen type people (no offense meant) that swear by this type of stuff. Feldenkrais himself wrote a number of books, mainly saying that people tend to become habituated into non-functional patterns of movement that hold back thier natural drive and energy; and that movement itself, since it occupies a large and primitive percent of the brain, assists in increased mental functioning through increased awareness and minimizing the "holding back" inhibitions that are expressed in our body posture. Awareness through Movement is his classic work, with both theory and exercises. I believe a book called The Master Moves is a seminar transcript. The local library had his book on judo. It was interesting, but nothing that foreshadowed his later work. It had a lot more physics in it than other judo books. I believe he injured his knee playing judo, and in rehabing himself from that injury he made his first discoveries of his method. As for usefulness for martial arts training, it would be interesting to speculate. I think most of the stuff we do in FMA is too ballistic in nature to benefit, but perhaps slowing it down ....? I think by studying to generation of power of stick strikes, hand strikes, etc. especially in combination with footwork, we learn a lot of the same things. I think like most people, some footwork and stick combinations seem easier or more natural than others and perhaps the method could have some usefulness there is helping movements seem more natural. Ultimately, though, if an FMA movement is useful even if it's not "natural", we find a way to do it, and repetition seems to have greater mileage than application of the Feldenkrais method would. Just my 0.02, I have some familiarity, but am definitely not an expert.
