Bobbe Edmonds --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Thu, 15 Aug 2002 02:50:34 -0700 (PDT) From: Georgios Christou To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Doce Pares and Kali Wisdom Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi all, This is an answer to two threads, one to Jarda and the other to Kali Wisdom. Jarda, when I was looking for a school to learn FMA I found two near my house each teaching a version by a different Canete. My choosing had nothing to do with who was the grandmaster, but rather how I interacted and "clicked" with the instructor of each school. Both "clubs" if I may be permitted to call them that, have excellent teachings in them. The main thing you have to consider is who you will be learning those teachings from, and if you would be able to learn and grow in the school environment that you will eventually pick! That should be your guide, and not silly politics. I'm not aware of any martial art (and list members please correct me if I'm wrong here) that has not been bothered by politics at least once... So again my advice is find someone you click with and learn from them, and forget about politics. As for Kali wisdom, it seems to me that many forget that the masters who make those blanket statements that mr. Edmonds refers to, are made by them after they have understood their systems. If I can refer to Bruce Lee's definitions of understanding the art, it is after one learns the art that can really appreciate and discard the things that don't work for them. These masters suffer from the "expert syndrome" when making these statements, and by doing so, forget that they are talking to a lot of people that do NOT understand the art, but are in the process of studying it. Thus the these statements get completely misinterpreted most times, leading to all the discussion of how one master says that A does work and B doesn't and it's a waste of time practicing B. Well, if one knows A and B like the master, then that statement might be food for thought for them, but definitely not for beginners and intermediate practitioners, and sometimes even advanced ones. I sincerely apologize if I have offended anyone writing these. My goal is not to offend just offer my 0.02. Respectfully, Georgios Christou __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
