Anytime I see any sort of "certification course" the BS-detector starts making that high-pitched warning noise. Who is doing the certifying? What will you be certified to do? Can the length of the course realistically prepare you to do what the sales pitch says? My detector also has a special fondness for pseudo-scientific or military jargon and acronyms. If given the choice between training with the guy in the black BDU's touting CAVEAT EMPTOR, and the little Filipino dude with old scars up and down his arms, I know where my money will tend to go. As we continue to wrap up 2002 and enter 2003, we have an opportunity to build up the WEKAF activities to not only further promote Filipino Martial Arts, but to also ready our young tournament participants to get their much needed exposure to WEKAF style competition. Having just completed the 7th World Championships in London England, where our Western Region competitors did extremely well, our goal is to increase the number of participants for the next run at the World Championships that will represent the USA, coming from the Western Region. The next World Championships will be held in Cebu Philippines in 2004. For Those that have never been to Cebu, especially during the WEKAF festivities, you will find it a truly enriching experience. In order to give our new competitors the experience needed for this level of competition, they must participate in many of the WEKAF sanctioned tournaments that will be scheduled in the upcoming years leading up to the Nationals. Director Steve Wolk will be announcing the opening of a WEKAF National Web site shortly. This will contain all the information and activities in WEKAF USA. Our own Western Region activities will be posted in the ‘Bandalan.com’ web site, as it has always been. Any questions or information can be directed to me through this email address,(snapial@aol.com)or call me at (925) 736-8731. The 'Bandalan.com' web site will be updated with any new information as we receive it either from the USA Director or the World Headquarters in Cebu. I will be shortly announcing a meeting for all practitioners of Filipino Martial Arts, who are interested in joining WEKAF Western Region. There, we can meet each other for the first time or for many of us, reunite with old friends and discuss the direction we want to take WEKAF during this time frame. We will also be electing officers of the Western Region. Many will be named Associate Directors of various sub-regions in the Western Region. I personally invite any suggestions from anyone, no matter what rank or experience they have. The only way for WEKAF to continue to grow and progress is to welcome any suggestion from it’s members. I am hoping to make these coming years a progressive and enjoyable time for all the Western Region members. Anyone familiar with when > Leo Gaje began to use the term? Or when Tatang switched from using Arnis > to Kali? Or Floro Villabrille? Or Dan Inosanto? > Hi Ray, Tuhon Gaje began using the term "Kali" in, I believe, the mid- to late 80's, in a move to do away with Spanish influenced terms (Arnis, Eskrima), and toward more Filipino based terms, such as Kali. At least this is what a former teacher of mine, who was quite close to Tuhon Gaje for a number of years, told me. Tuhon Gaje wanted Filipino martial artists to take more national pride in their arts, and the culture behind them. I am also well aware that many of our Filipino contributors tell us that the term "Kali" was all but unknown in the Philippines until very recently. I can also relate a story concerning Tatang Illustrisimo's decision to go to "Kali"; he stated that the Westerners coming to him for instruction were asking to be taught "Kali," not being familiar with "Eskrima" or "Arnis" as much as they were with "Kali." I saw a series of 8 mm films in the mid '70's featuring Dan Inosanto and Richard Bustillo demonstrating the art of "Escrima," but Dan and Richard did call their school on Normandie the "Filipino Kali Academy" even then. John Lacoste referred to his art as "Escrima," and Floro Villabrille was presented a certificate by, I think, the Governor of Hawaii back in the '40s or '50s declaring him the undefeated master of "Escrima." I could be wrong about the dates and the presenter of this certificate, but I am sure about the title bestowed. GT Leo Gaje originally called his system Pekiti Tirsia ARNIS until the mid 1970s when he was very active in a strong, resurgent Filipino cultural reconstructivist movement. Dan Inosanto got his use of the word Kali from GM Villabrille and from GT Leo Gaje, so he started using the term in the early to mid 1970s. I don't know when GM Villabrille began using the term KALI. Tatang Ilustrisimo used to call his style "Olistrisimo or Ilustrisimo escrima" until he was influenced by his students Tony Diego, Edgar Sulite, and Topher Ricketts to call the system Kali Ilustrisimo as the word kali was recognizeable to Americans who needed instruction. Here in the Philippines, the generic word for FMA is simply arnis. Now the Cebuanos (who are our version of the troublesome Montrealer Quebecois) insist that the generic word is escrima/eskrima, altho the Tagalogs, Bicolanos and the Ilonggos who outnumber them in the Phils. prefer to use ARNIS. ===== Earn $$ just by receiving and reading email! http://www.resource-a-day.net/member/index.cgi?Brandon96 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
