GT Gaje was involved with NARAPHIL at that time and that name worked politically as well as stylistically. Kali, as a non spanish identifier, became more predominant in Pekiti Tirsia towards the middle 1980's and usage had been completely transformed by 1987 - 1988. There still is a group in New York that identify it as Arnis. This group is a descentant of Pekiti Tirsia Magino-O Tom Bisio who left GT Gaje in 1987 to pursue Chinese internal arts and FMA under Filemon "Momoy" Canete. Why would the timing matter anyway? I wanted to get in on the thread of Alex's about the Kombatan Arnis but by the time I read it, it had ended. Anyway Alex how about an update on the seminar/get together with GM Ernesto Presas. Speaking of GM Ernesto Presas next weekend the 24th and 25th of August, Unlimited Success Martial Arts and I are hosting a seminar with him. Unlimited Success Martial Arts is located in Allen TX (far north area of the Dallas FT. Worth metorplex) about 25 miles North of downtown Dallas. The seminar times are 12:30pm-6:30pm on Saturday the 24th 10:00-3:30pm on Sunday the 25th Cost is $119.00 for both days and $60.00 for one day. However we are offering discounts for 2 or more people that sign up at the same time. A 10% discount for the 2nd through the 5th person, and if 5 people sign up then a sixth person can come free. We had a late start in promoting the seminar and I frankly failed to submit this before the preregistration deadline (sorry) expired. Currently I'm told we have about 18 people scheduled to attend; some Krav students, TKD/Karate students, some of Hock's people, and some Arnis players as well. So it should be a good mix. GM Ernesto hasn't been in the Dallas area in 4 years so when we scheduled the seminar we set the price to be affordable (which is why we have the discounts) and allow a good deal of training time. A couple of other instructors whom have traveled with me to Tulsa to see GM Ernesto in the past had wanted me to try and get him to come here and the Krav Maga school that I teach a class for was gracious enough to co-sponsor him (and we get to use their school, hooray for padded floors). Contact info is below Unlimited Success Martial Arts Inc. 1328 West McDermott Suite 250 Allen TX 75013 972-390-7161 On a side note finally there seems to be more interest in bringing some FMA instructors to the DFW area. This weekend both Datu Hartman and Guro Inosanto were both here in different cities but still in the metroplex. Next weekend is GM Ernesto's seminar and about three weeks after that is Tuhon Gaje's seminar in Richardson. Hopefully next year it will be spaced out a little better since I would have liked to attend any or all of them. Oh well. If anyone comes to the seminar with GM stop me and introduce yourself. I'd enjoy meeting some other FMA practitioners in the area. Thank you M. Nakihid Philippine Martial Arts Crusaders Thank you for your help in finding a place to train when I visit Baguio City. I don't know when my next visit will be, but I look forward to training with the Cordillera Arnis Federation. I had been searching on the internet for a place to train there, but have only recieved responses from people in Manila. I am currently training in the Inosannto blend of Kali I have previously trained in Modern Arnis under The Professor. However I consider my self a beginner. I will contact you before my next visit to Baguio. That's too complicated for me to answer in less than 5 hours of typing. But to summarize: I have a chart that separates the mental and physical aspects of teaching ANY physical movement. It is based on Feldenkaris' theories with five categories under the mental side and four under the physical side, the integration of which results in Whole Body Movement or the manifestation of Chi as it is more commonly known. The chart is 30 inches long and 11 inches wide, and so far no one has come up with any aspect of martial arts training that is not throughly covered in the chart. It is the instructional methodology equivalent of Bruce Lee's five ways of attack. Feldenkrais' principles are pervasive in the structure of the chart. Let's look at section four of the physical aspects of training which is Means of Spatial Orientation. This section deals with how you orient yourself relative to the field of gravity, some would simply call this balance, but it goes much deeper than that. Most are familiar with the common means of spatial orientation: Vestibular apparatus (middle ear), Auditory inputs (Stereo Sound) , Visual (Stereo Depth Perception), Olfactory inputs (Smell senses) . The inputs that are less common, and are dealt with extensively by Feldenkrais, is the function of the Haptic System of the body which includes the built in gravity receptors in the muscles and the related tactile inputs (touch). Feldenkrais divides all muscles in the body in to those that work with gravity and those that work against it as part of his foundational theory. When you integrate the haptic aspects with the other areas then you have a solid analytical tool for solving a student's problem in any particular area. For myself I have badly damaged middle ears , and minimal depth percetion, and have to rely more strongly on other means of spatial orientation. Being aware of this means that I choose my training options to compensate for these weaknesses. Feldenkrais' learning methods are specifically designed to address problem solving in these areas and many others. I knew guys in the Visayas who called it karaan, similar to the "old" style of eskrima Leo Giron talked about from Pangasinan called "cadaan". Though from what I heard , karaan in the Visayas was shorter style, and cadaan was longer style. If I'm wrong sorry, I'm just stating what I heard. I also hear olisi/yantok for stick, though I don't know if olisi is Sp. or Filpino in origin. Research on Filipino terminology is hard, a lot of Filipinos use words alot of times in the generic sense. My relatives for instance will ask, "Where are you going again, "ag-karate?", meaning, that I'm going to eskrima practice. The Tagalog word for sword for instance, is kampilan. Although, in the Visayas it is a type of sword, if most Tagalogs don't use espada, they use the word kampilan. Same with the word "bolo", that word is used to describe many different types of blades, even if they might be specifically an itak, buning, espada, machete, and the stub -bladed machetes for plantation work. -Erwin Legaspi "All I have ever longed for in my life . . . a vision of God." - 9th and 10th century Sufi mystic Mansur Al-Hallaj "Intellect and intelligence do not go together. Intelligence is obtained only when the heart and mind reach an agreement." - Jiddu Krishnamurti --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues are available via ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com.
