This was a smaller one, only ~130 people attending the various sessions on Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday. The Inayan Reactive Knife Defense (RKD) portion was very well received. We miss you, Suro... (that's a Frank Zappa tune, circa ~1969) Anybody know of any fma training groups in MT? I am favoring Missoula MT. Thanks, mike mcnally, new list member ps: Alain Buresse has advised me of famous kickboxer Jim Harrison having schools in Missoula, and Alian's teaching Hapkido there is also a plus, as the info on his tapes, books, background, is also intriguing. Missoula is a tempting destination even without fma, ...even without MA's. mike mcnally --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Tue, 20 Aug 2002 10:03:02 -1000 (HST) From: TABULA RAZA To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Austronesian paradigm shift Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hello everyone, Just wanted to put out another anthropological paradigm. Mostly everyone I know has talked about the Austronesians (that is Malay-Polynesian, including Filipinos) as coming from Indonesian. However, since I come from the UNiversity of Hawaii, the more recent and most widely accepted train of thought here is that the Austronesians came from s. China, passed through Taiwan and through the Philippines were they routes divided into two - one went to Polynesia, Guam and the Marianas, and one went to Indonesia. This is the other train of thought taught here since the professor who came up with this theory, Prof. Wilhelm B. Solheim is an Emeritus Professor here at UH. I just wanted to note that most people think of Philippine history as being descended from another area's history, i.e. Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei , China and such - never the ancestor or even an originator. Although the Philippines has done its share of imitating, it also has done its share of innovating, like anywhwere else in the world. Therefore, I go out on a limb, not as a proud Fil-Am, nor as a proud FMA practitioner, to say that, " I most certainly do not believe that FMA are watered down versions of antedated Malay martial art from Indonesia, Malaysia or whatever." Though there is possible historical influence, FMA is an entity all its own, shaped in its own environs. If its influenced by the Muslims or Hindus, most people don't think of the Malay martial arts as being watered down. I would like some research to be done, if ever possible as to the pre-Muslim martial arts of Indonesia. That would make for some interesting stuff. Art is born out of experience. How can anything be watered down if there are more and varied experiences in terms of history and such? The only thing I believe that ever gets watered down in any art is training. Plain and simple. Sorry for a long rambling, and I hope my intentions don't get misconstrued, just trying to give credit where credit is due. I really don't care to do pre-Hispanic research on eskrima anymore, because I feel some of the best systems have come directly out of the down and dirty conflicts straight up with the Spanish. I don't think eskrima or any other art for that matter needs historical validation to prove its effectiveness. If it works, it works. Many other martial arts from Asia have long histories, good for reading - FMA doesn't. But it still great, cuz' it can still kick ass. And you don't need any history to prove that, just you and your motivation to train hard. -Erwin Legaspi "All I have ever longed for in my life . . . a vision of God." - 9th and 10th century Sufi mystic Mansur Al-Hallaj "Intellect and intelligence do not go together. Pistahan will take place from Aug. 31 - Sept. 1 at the Yerba Buena Gardens in San Francisco. The demo is scheduled for Sunday, although the exact time is still to be determined. Master Darren Tibon will be in attendance, along with the Angel's Disciples chapters from Stockton and the Bay Area. Along with some of the basic techniques in Serrada (basic counters, stick on stick locks, hand on weapon, hand on hand, lock and block, and flow sparring), Angel's Disciples will also demonstrate some of its advanced-level training (rising sun, knife techniques, pick flow), and datu-level training (espada y daga lock and block, espada y daga vs. long stick). We hope you all can make it and give your support.
