Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net >As I've confessed previously, I am a simple-minded doggy on matters of >terminology-- I just don't get the passion that these matters seem to >excite amongst many. Having lived in The Philippines for extended periods over the last 12 years it's easy for me to see why indigenous FMA instructors get so bent out of shape about just words. Hundreds of years of explotation at the hands of foreigners has left them very culturally sensitive (and with right too.) With regards to the FMA they feel that the west does not pay enough respect to the cultural roots of the FMA. Not just this, but incorrect terminology, and some major historical inaccuracies (as per Dan Inosantos book) about the FMA get fed back to them as fact. >As I've noted here before, Guro Inosanto is quoting his teachers, not >taking a personal position. "they say , , , if what they say is true , , >," How much clearer can he make it? IMO this is not the case. Why would he put a statement made by others in his book (the History section) if he didn't believe it to be true. His actions in never going to the Philippines to find out for himself also points to the fact that he believed what his teachers were saying. How can you not take a personal position on the validity of your sources when you write a history segment in a book? If he didn't believe it, he would have left it out. >As for efforts "documenting varying styles" I submit that very few are in >his league in this regard. Except for the fact he has ignored all the indigenous FMA instructors with the exception of the ones that came to him. Considering the number of indigenous FMA instructors (and styles) doesn't this limit the scope of the book and the depth of his knowledge (with regards to styles of FMA) >As for the passed Masters whose knowledge died with them-- perhaps their >belief in secrecy had something to do with it? Edgar Sulite's book on Masters of Arnis "Kali" and Eskrima would seem to contradict the above statement. The fact is, nearly all the indigenous FMA instructors were more than willing to have their individual styles documented. The 1st World Instructors Seminar held in 87 in Cebu also showed that Filipino instructors were willing to share knowledge (in exchange for some exposure overseas). --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Sat, 24 Aug 2002 12:20:26 +0200 Organization: http://freemail.web.de/ From: Christian von Praun To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] =?iso-8859-1?Q?Seminar=20Warriors-Eskrima=20in=20D=FCsseldorf/G ermany?= Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi to all, there will be a Seminar for Warriors-Eskrima in Düsseldorf/Germany. We have GM Danny Guba in the UK, so who else around the globe is a GM in Doce Pares? It was shot in the Philippines, and it was Jeff Chandler's last movie before his premature death. I have no idea whether it is historically accurate, or a pure Hollywood war movie. Not sure, but it might be a rank/terminology thing. As I recall Richard Bustillo is (at least he was) the only 9th Degree Black Belt (not in the RP) under Manong Cacoy. It might be that 9th = GM, not 8th. I understand there are several non-RP 8th Degree Black Belts round...
