First of all, his escrima instructors (the old manongs) were all practically unschooled, with perhaps having reached only up to third or fourth grade of elementary school education in prewar Philippines. That's exactly why they had to find work in the USA as unskilled laborers. One of the myths in that otherwise wonderful book was the assertion that all the arnis greats had left the Philippines and moved to the USA. As we can see, that's not true. Most of the greats stayed home, with only a handful making it to the USA (Villabrille, Giron, Lacoste, etc.). ===== Earn $$ just by receiving and reading email! http://www.resource-a-day.net/member/index.cgi?Brandon96 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? About terminology, Guro has repeatedly explained the numerous reasons for differing terminology, i.e., teachers from varied regions, teachers with varied academic education, etc. As for understanding the background that the arts came from no one has done more in the US to help students of the FMA appreciate the Filipino culture and history. Guro Inosanto is a history teacher. I mean an honest to goodness, in school with little kids school teacher. He knows that the study of history is almost always subjective(especially before wide spread literacy) and requires careful interpretation. I know that you honor your instructor. Guro Inosanto does that too but from the dual view points as a historian and martial arts student. He is aware his teachers explanations about similar topics may differ and he honors their beliefs. As to why he has never gone to the Philippines, ask him, don't assume he waits for others to come to him. You seem to be angry about this topic, please remember with out Guro Inosanto, we would all be doing something else. I had forgotten that fact. My offense intended, but my apologies anyway. All due respect to Guro I, but the above is a bit of a stretch. Perhaps many, but IMHO not most and clearly not all. Its such a moot argument made by people who have spent exactly ZERO time with the man. Its not like he didnt try several times. At several seminars he stated that he had his travel itinerary all set only to be foiled by the rather dubous political climate in the 70's (including, but not limited to, Martial freaking Law). Also one time he planned to go, I believe his son decided to born early & obviously that takes precedence. Not to mention alot of that area is not exactly friendly to Americans now or then. And of course there is the fact that he has other commitments to many people & family of which Mr. David Eke is not one. And as far as accepting what his teachers said as the truth, basically, if you can get two or more Manongs from different systems to agree on the simple question of whether or not the sun is shining then maybe the true history of the arts will come out. And please dont give me that BS about "culturally sensative" cause they are more than willing to change the name of their art at any given time to suit western ideas (and by the way it wasnt a westerner who first used the word Kali, it was a Filipino) & make $$, and that is fine, its theirs do do with what they choose. But dont then ascribe a moral high ground that may have never existed because you dont speak for them or even every person of Filipino descent, you speak only for yourself. So real quick, off the top of my head Guro Inosanto's teachers who emigrated, or at least got here somehow, to the US (they did not "come to him", I'm sure they didnt just say "well its time to go teach a guy named Danny so I'll move to the US", what a stupid comment that was) include Juanito LaCoste, Floro Villabrille, Regino Illustrisimo, Angel Caballes, Leo Giron, Leo Gaje, Edgar Sulite and many more but for sure these few all had one thing in common - they are/were all the masters of their respective systems, so what was your point again? whatever...
