Despite the inclusion of my name in the list, I heartily concur with the larger point being made. However, in the interests of accuracy I must note that Eric "Top Dog" Knaus started with Tom Bisio and is principally a product of Grand Tuhon Leo Gaje of Pekiti Tirsia. He did train in Guro I's class in the mid 80s for a while-- this is when he and I got the "After Midnight Group" going from which the Dog Brothers sprang. BTW, as far as giving credit goes please see our video "The Grandfathers Speak". Delighted to see this thread winding down, Crafty Dog --__--__-- Message: 2 From: Seraksatu@aol.com Date: Tue, 27 Aug 2002 10:27:35 EDT To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Teacher of Teachers, the Ultimate Student Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi to all, Ustad Dan Inosanto comes to the VDT Academy in completing Pukulan Silat Serak and agree with mr Phil Hurcum, and as many of the well noted teachers as of today. As I teach Ustad Dan Inosanto Silat Serak, he teaches me on how to be a student again, and it is great, I have not followed the tread, and can only relate this. He teach, shows and learns. I seen so many folks come and go. Ustad Dan Inosanto has set a example ever since the early sixties and has reached many accomplishments that leaves many gasping in the shadows of this one man that did so much to perpetuate the martial arts. Action that speaks louder then words ever could be placed in any book, magazine or the internet. FACTS. regards, Pak Vic Fact: Dan Inosanto is probably the most written about Filipino Martial Artist in N America at this time and previously.People come from all over the world to study with him for a reason. As there are many people practicing FMA now and there are some extremely talented practioners, the fact remains that Dan Inosanto wrote the most widely accepted book on this topic ever written. For 15 to 20 years it was pretty much the textbook. The next book that was written has been accused of the same things as started this thread. Mark Wileys book has been criticized as inaccurate among other things less pleasant. Could this be that like many other styles, getting true information in this topic can be harder than pulling teeth out of a frog. Everybody has a different story about the same thing, unless you talk to these people who do this or those guys who do that. Don't worry they'll set you straight. Which came first the chicken or the egg? Organized religion or gut feeling and instinct? Balintawak or Doce Pares. Coke or Pepsi. HA! Guro Inosanto has been making good students for years. Marc Denny. Paul Vunak. Rick Tucci. Eric Knaus. Cass Magda. Erik Paulson. Just to name a few. I could go on. People I have personally met, Loki "Tricky Dog" Jorgensen, Stephan Kesting of grapplearts.com. Name me another Guro who has been this productive in bringing able competent martial artists into being. Name me another teacher with so many renowned students. Name me another teacher respected by so many instructors in so many other styles. Affiliated with so many other instructors who are in their own right "big names". Maybe he made some mistakes, so what! So he never went to the Phillipines, so what! Maybe it hurts, maybe he was broke! It seems to me he is a pretty humble private guy. Kind of quiet. I don't know him I could be wrong. I can guess he never meant to slap anyone in the face though. Leave him alone. Let's debate JKD or JKD concepts. Coke or Pepsi? Egg or chicken? Beef adobo or chicken adobo? Mac or windows? Whatever. I've seen two of his tapes, one I thought was pretty good, the other not so hot. He seems to take a rather common sense approach. The art he talks about, Chu Fen Do (or something like that)... His creation or .?.?. Thx. I am currently studying Estalilla Kabaroan under Guro Ed Bansuelo in Sacramento,CA. So far we have learned 14 "anyos" or forms and can derrive another 5 "anyos" by applying the "Compuesta" movements to some of the simpler forms. There are several other forms in the art that I have yet to be exposed to. Anthony Manansala PS Great job on the digest, Ray. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! The open to all segment of the seminar will be held on for one (1) day only - Sunday, September 29, 1 - 4pm at: The International Schools of Self Defense, 5901 South Transit Road (NYS RT.78), Big Lots Plaza, Lockport, NY. The seminar fee will be $55 advanced, paid before September 23, 2002 and $70 at the door. Advanced payments may be mailed to: Jerome Barber, Ed.D. Suite 230 5999 South Park Avenue Hamburg, NY, 14075 Make the seminar checks/ money orders payable to Bram Frank. If you wish to purchase a Spyderco Gunting Training Drone - the red handled version. send a check/ money order for $125 to the above address and make it payable to Dr. Jerome Barber. Please have your order in before September 5, 2002. There will not a shipping and handling fee because you will receive delivery at the seminar site. The original Saturday date for training has been deleted from the schedule due to the fact that Master Frank and I have received a number of requests from institutional representatives for closed door training sessions and his travel schedule and other bookings have made it impossible to to extend his visit to the Buffalo area, beyond Monday, September 30. Therefore we needed to alter the orginal announced schedule of training. It has taken quite awhile for the Gunting Knife to begin to gain the kind of attention in the USA and Canada that it has been receiving in Europe. There have been over 100 articles published in Europe, about the Gunting in the past two years since its introduction on the market. Unfortunately for us here in the USA and Canada, Spyderco has not spent any significant advertising dollars or actively sought reviews of this tool, in spite of a very good sales volume from the European market, in both individual and insitutional (police and military) sales. In the USA and Canada, the Guntinng is becoming known via the oldest and least precise method that we have in the market place - word of mouth. I really believe that the Gunnting is a unique and valuble self defense tool. I enjoy the fact that this kniiife has three (3) modes of utilization: impact tool, joint-locking tool and bladed tool. there is not another kniife on the market today that has all THREE use possibilites, that i am aware of at this time. --------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------- Absulum _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues are available via ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com.
