I have been studying FMA for over two years now and I am no where near being an instructor (although I realize that other people learn faster) All I know is that it will not be fair for you and your future students if you start teaching them something with only 20 hours worth of experience. I mean how do you even know that if that style (whatever that maybe) will eveen compliment JUDOKA? Tell us who did this to you? Francis S. I have previously trained military personnel, police officers, and civilians in unarmed fighting, impact and edged weaponry, and firearms. I am new to eskrima, I did not know it is a fighting system with long history and respected masters. I believed it will be just some techniks, like karateka also do some bo. I hope I have not insulted you or your art. I feel ashamed. I have bought a Eskrima book and will start reading and stop asking stupid questions. I would never let a Judoka teach after 20 hours, or 200. I found the offer in the Internet (www.eskrima.nl, German part). The man who sent me the offer is Mr. Mayr from Bielefeld. He is from Doce Pares Europa and Mr. Frans Stroeven will be teacher. He said I will become Doce Pares Eskrima Basic instructor. The Diplom will also be from Großmeister Dionisio Cañete and will be recognized world wide by Doce Pares Eskrima. Mayr writes the only organisation recognized by Phillipines government is Doce Pares Klub. I send copies of the offer I got to the German friends who answered to my question, so maybe they can say more, my english is not good. And thank you for me saving my money. May I apologize again. Michael. --__--__-- Message: 6 From: "al sardinas" To: Date: Thu, 5 Sep 2002 15:37:27 -0400 Subject: [Eskrima] FMA Dominates the World Head Of Family Sokeship Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Like Professor Dan Anderson, this past Labor Day weekend I attended the World Head of Family Sokeship Council Hall of Fame (WHFSC) event in Orlando, Florida. This was the 8th annual gathering of grandmasters from all martial art systems from around the world. This year the FMA dominated the event with 10 demonstrations. The following are the systems (in order of demonstration appearance - I think) and my brief comments on each demonstration that I saw. Not all guros demonstrated. They were: Eskabo-Daan Master Robert Castro Guro Godofredo P. Dizon IV Guro Joseph Camins Guro Rommel Gella Master Castro explained that Eskabo-Daan is a system based Escrima, Serada, Kali, Arnis, Boxing, & Jeet Kune Do. Master Castro demonstrated many techniques with speed and efficiency and set the bar for all other demos that followed. Filipino Combat Systems Master Ray Dionaldo Guro Rico Cortes Knives, knives and more knives. Drills, drills, drills. All impressive. Grand Finale - Ray's young son (10?) striking a straw out of Ray's mouth with a whip. What fatherly love! Modern Arnis Datu Tim Hartman I did not catch all of Datu Hartman's demo but for what I saw show simplicity and accuracy. BTW, Datu Hartman is very humble when I addressed him as Datu, he told me to just call him Tim. Pambuan Arnis Tulisan Caballero Association Ama Guro Raffy Pambuan GuroWoody Woodman GuroTravis De Vita Guro Richard Lee I only saw about a minute of this demonstration where Ama Guro held the audience in awe with the cracking of his whip in the air and striking paper out of his assistants' hands and straws from one person's ears and mouth. Garimot System Grandmaster Gat Puno Abon "Garimot" Baet Guro Shane Singh Guro Alfredo Sardinas Jackie Chan, I mean Gat Puno Baet demonstrated various techniques from Laguna Arnis and Harimaw Buno. Although deadly, he had the audience in stitches. Modern Arnis 80 Professor Dan Anderson I only caught the Professor performing several locks that made his opponent submit to the carpet rather quickly. Master at Arms Bram Frank Guro Frank Olesen Guro Andy Wires Guro Tomas Lehmann I missed this demo completely. Balintiwak Eskrima Cuentada Grandmaster Bobby Taboada Guro Irwin Carmichael Guro Sharon Loparo Guro Wendy Weeks Guro Luis Grady Guro Michael Rhoads Guro Bill Nolan Guro Bill Thurston Guro George Penefiel Guro Raymond Ascion Guro Eric Lawrence Guro Patrick Schmidt Guro Steve Mirman I only caught about the last minute of this demo when I saw Guros Eric and Luis paint each other ferociously with their unpadded sticks. I thought I was watching a Dog Brothers expo for a second. For what I could see it appeared that Guro Irwin Carmichael was running the demo and Grandmaster Taboada spoke briefly. BTW, Guro Carmichael is one of the nicest guys you can meet. Grandmaster Federico T. Lazo Guro Ricky Lazo I missed this one too. International Philippine Martial Arts Federation & Kombatan Grandmaster Ernesto Presas Guro Darwin Duran Guro Warlito Conception Guro Mateo Masellones Jr. Guro Julius Melegrito Guro Marvin Dickerson Guro Michael Guingona (Mayor of Daly City) Guro Danny Tiliano Guro Jim Miyake Guro Lona Vongthonthip Guro Mike Bowers Guro Jeff Sprawls Guro Mike Denny Guro Joel Barkemeyer Guro Paulla Barkemeyer GM Presas had his demo team display many single, double stick and knife drills and had all of us laughing at different times throughout. I particularly like his techniques with a newspaper, water bottle and ballpoint pen. I was amazed with all the speed the Kombatan Guros had especially Guro Warlito Conception. If you were counting there were over 48 FMA Grandmasters and masters at this event. And in all honesty I can say that the FMA's gave the best demos because each system showed something different whereas the other demos were basically the same punch and kick. This year I had a lot of responsibilities helping Gat Puno Baet at this event so I could not see every demo. That is why I paid in advance for the videotapes of this event. If anyone would like to purchase the 4 videotape set of this event which also included other martial art systems can contact Video Quest, Inc. at 1-800-340-9664. The cost is $60 (includes shipping). Although, no videotaping was allowed I was able to capture the demos of Gat Puno and GM Presas . If anyone would like to get a copy of this 33 minuite Demo Mpeg CD please email me privately (energy_as@hotmail.com) and I will send you the details and a sample of the video next week. The cost $3 domestic or $4 overseas. After Saturday night's banquet about 30 of us went to Universal Studios night spot, City Walk. Although most of us tried to dance it was Guro Warlito who had the most luck with the opposite sex. For a 58 year old man I was very impressed. At one time he was dancing with about 6 girls dancing all around him. He also showed us a neat trick of breaking the bottom of a bottle filled with water with one strike on the top. FMA Iron Palm? I also should mention Guro Darwin Duran, he is the most polite, humble and most patient Filipino who I ever met. Overall, a gentleman. Finally, there is Guro Julius Melegrito. There are no words that can describe him. I don't think he has a single enemy on earth. It is always a great pleasure to see him. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net If I were you, bro, I'd save up your 500 EU, and work towards traveling to the Philippines and finding a Guro there, or at the very least, hooking up with the "Barangay Tanod", or the neighborhood watchmen, at least those who carry and know how to use sticks. At any rate, weaponry is a totally different animal than Judo. Trust me, I started out in Judo, and, while the effort might not seem as strenuous, stick and blade work demands more of your mental faculties. You are, after all, training to emerge the victor over someone who has a bat or knife and who so very badly wants to either cave your skull in or add another intestinal tract to your digestive system. This cannot be learned in a mere 20 hours, my bro. It takes a while. Be careful of who you talk to. ___________________________________________________ Communicate with others using Lycos Mail for FREE! http://mail.lycos.com --__--__-- Message: 9 From: "Bill S Lowery" To: Date: Thu, 5 Sep 2002 22:12:02 +0100 Subject: [Eskrima] Re: 20 hours Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi Ray, >May I ask what organization this is that is recognized by the Philippines gov? Now I realize that different countries do things differently and that you may be required to have some type of official certification to teach which may not be required in other countries. In general it is my opinion that "official certifications" from most any government body is probably worthless. Even certifications from sports bodies would seem to be worthless since we are talking about an art here, not a sport. I believe that Deiter mentioned certification from the Philippine Olympic Committee group. Again, not sure what good that would be either. As I understand it (and please correct me where I am wrong) the IOC (Intl Olympic Committee) governs the sports in the Olympics and those hoping for inclusion in the Olympic Games. Then each country would have a POC (Philippine Olympic Committee) or a USOC (US Olympic Committee) that governs those same sports within their respective countries. Thus the only thing that an OC within the RP would be over would be a sport form of Arnis/Eskrima, e.g. WEKAF, and then only within that one particular country. And I am assuming there is still a push to get WEKAF-style fighting into the Olympics. Even so, an OC in one country would have no real interest in what is going on within another country. Why would it? I personally have seen all this play out wrt Taekwondo over the last 30 years and cannot recommend it. When sports bodies get involved, the art becomes a sport. No problem sports, if that is what you are looking for...
