For all we know they >could be indeed combative takes of Judo adapted by our >oldtimer GMs. On the other hand, I would think they >just appropriated the term to be fashionable, although >in so doing they just gave a new name to old >tricks/techniques which used to be called just plain >"pangamut" or "dumog" or whatever they called it. My understanding of the term "combat judo" is that it refers to striking, locking, and throwing methods against an opponent armed with a knife or dagger. These techniques are adapted to Eskrima and bear little relation to Judo or classical Jujutsu. Perhaps the term may reflect the influence of Japanese martial arts in the Phillipines. Or perhaps it reflects the experiences of eskrimadors during the second World War - many of whom were active in the resistance. I have practiced the "combat judo" techniques of San Miguel Eskrima. They are simple, direct, and effective: more in the line of military combatives than a classical Japanese style. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Howdy Folks, Elrik Jundis here. I've talked about this before and so have others and now it's happening. I am working with several groups to have a gathering of Filipino Martial Art Practitioners in November. This will be the first of an ongoing tradition. We are still working on a venue and date but it will most likely be in San Francisco or Daly City. We intend to follow a format similar to what was done in the Vancover Area several years ago. This event is to promote our arts and to create a venue for our martial community to reconnect. There will be an acknowledgement ceremony, demonstrations, several informal workshops, and trournament sparing (which will also be open to first timers). The day will also include a potluck as well and is meant to be fun and informal. This is a not for profit event and any fee will be just to cover the venue and liabilities. If you are local practitioner or instructor please contact me so you and your school can participate. Abraham Idjirani, spokesman for Sultan Esmail Kiram, said the Sultan is saddened that the government has again put on the back burner the claim to Sabah, from where 27,000 Filipinos have been deported since January, and that the heirs were not represented in any talks with the Malaysian government. "We received no invitation from Malacanang. We are being ignored. The government is compromising the Sabah claim [in exchange] for more investments from Malaysia, which disfranchises the legal rights of Filipinos, Idjirani told Today in a telephone interview Monday. Idjirani said Malacanang has compelled the recently revived Legislative-Executive Development Advisory Council on Sabah to give priority to easing the tension brought on by the inhumane treatment of Filipino deportees from Malaysia without considering the possible recovery of Sabah from the former British colony. He believes the councils decision to disregard the Sabah claim could be influenced by former President Fidel Ramos, an Arroyo adviser. "I dont think this decision will appease the sultan, said Idjirani, who disclosed that Kiram will file a complaint with the United Nations to reclaim Sabah. Malaysia has been paying the Sultanate of Sulu 5,300 ringgit, or P72,761, yearly for Sabahs lease since Malaysia won independence in 1963 from the British empire. The existence of the agreement shows who is the rightful owner of Sabah, according to Idjirani. He said the sultanate had authorized the Philippine government to reclaim Sabah in 1963 after the Ruma Bichara (Council of the Sultanate), in a resolution, ordered Kiram to transfer his title of sovereignty over the territory and inhabitants of North Borneo to the Republic of the Philippines. Kiram complied with the councils resolution out of loyalty to the Philippine government, added Idjirani. "The Sultan is following the teaching of the Koran, and the Philippine Constitution states that an ordinary citizen cannot lodge a complaint against a foreign government if it doesnt pass through the government, he explained. But after more than 20 years and the Philippine government did not exercise that authority, the sultanate was forced to remove that authority in 1988. "That should the republic fail to recover North Borneo after exhausting all peaceful means, this transfer document shall IPSO facto become null and void and the Sultan of Sulu shall be free to assert his sovereignty over North Borneo by other means available to all sovereignty claimants, and the transfer document, above all, shall equally stipulate that the natural resources of North Borneo be utilized for the preservation and improvement of the ancient Sultanate of Sulu, said the councils resolution, a copy of which was given Today. Kiram will also assert the Sultanates ownership of Sabah before the European Union and the United States Congress. Idjarani said that once Sabah is recovered, it could be the answer to Mindanaos poverty since the island produces US$ 60 billion from its gross national product. He added that Kiram was also not pleased with the statement of Nur Jaafar, presidential adviser on Muslim communities, that Filipino deportees are not being maltreated in Malaysias detention camps. "He [Sultan] is very dismayed by the mission sent by the Philippine government. The mission has submitted to the will of the Malaysian government. [Jaafar] is not telling the truth according to Islamic teachings, Idjirani stressed. In Davao City, police tightened security following reports that Abu Sayyaf bandits may mix with the deportees and evade the manhunt for the bandits. Senior Supt. Leopoldo Bataoil, spokesman for the National Police, said the police were on the lookout for Abu Sayyaf bandits who may evade the military manhunt by posing as deportees. A Pakistani, who arrived here disguised as a deportee from Malaysia, was arrested by the police last week. Bataoil said Task Force Deportees has assembled the best police units from Western Mindanao, Provincial Police Command and the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Police Command. Malacanang said government actions on the mass deportation of Filipinos in Sabah will not be confined to the much-criticized report of Jaafar, because it has mapped out an eight-point comprehensive strategy to deal with the matter. Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye said in a news briefing that Malacanang considers the Jaafar report fair, despite allegations that it deodorized the real condition of undocumented Filipinos in three detention centers in Sabah. "[The members of the mission] saw that there was a very significant improvement in the holding centers. They also noticed perceptible improvements in the treatment of the repatriates, so they reported what they saw -- no more, no less, Bunye said. Nevertheless the reports of abuses that the mission had received are being verified. The President is not inclined to send another team to Sabah to countercheck Jaafars report. Sen. Aquilino Pimentel Jr. had criticized the Jaafar report for conveying that all is well in the detention centers and the manner of deportation of the Filipinos. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues are available via ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com.
