Worth checking out at your nearby Filipino video store is an excellent Philippine made movie showcasing the talents of the Manila Yaw Yan group, of which includes Raul "Boy" Fernandez as the star of the film. The movie(s) as titled are "Ako ang Sasagupa- Patay kung Patay", and the sequel "Ako and Sasagupa pt.2- Wala Akong Binuhay na Kaaway". You can also specify the diameter as well depending on how light or heavy a stick you want. They will ship anywhere in the country. The sticks aren’t pretty, but they are tough and will take a good beating. They are used to making sticks for Filipino martial artists, and a lot of schools use them. They have excellent customer service as the following story will bear out: I recently ordered 40 sticks for a seminar with Tom Bisio here in Whitestone, N.Y. on Sunday. It was a rush order and when they arrived on Friday I was upset to learn that the length was too short. A phone call to one of their managers, John Fenton, established that the computer order had been typed incorrectly. It was too late to ship another order so I asked if there was any way that I could drive down to their factory on Saturday and pick up some nine-foot lengths, so that I could cut them to size for the seminar the next day. This would have involved them straightening the lengths for me after work on Friday, which they said they would do. Not only did they allow me to come down on Saturday (on a day when their factory is closed), but I found out that John had stayed up all night Friday and Saturday morning to straighten and cut the rattan to the exact specifications that I had originally ordered - after filling an order for another customer late Friday night. John met me at the door at 1:30 in the afternoon, and let me choose the sticks that I wanted from a lot of about 60 that he had laid out on a table for me. (BTW, if anyone is interested in 40 30" length, 7/8"-1" diameter sticks, they can be located at the above address.) The first time I hit one of those my shin hurt like hell despite coming from a Muay Thai back ground. Those bags are good to train with when you are training for a fight , but not I wouldn't advice it for everyday use. Your body pays for it in the long run. It would've been nice if you were able to visit the Manila gym. The YY there is a little bit different and the bag is even worse. With regards to whether YY practitioners are tougher than Muay thai is a matter of opinion. When we fought Muay thai, we weren't suppose to fight them head on. They live in the gym , we didn't . It was a 1 on 1 basis. Like they say, it's not the style but the student. I'd say we had more endurance than Muay Thai fighters but not necessarily tougher. The first time I hit one of those my > shin hurt like hell despite coming from a Muay Thai back ground. Reminds me a story I like to tell on a friend... He was visiting for the first time the MT school I was then training at. The school had several heavy bags hung in a row, softest bag on one end working up to the leather-over-concrete (or so it seemed) bag on the other end. I was on the other side of the gym (it was a rather large room) and noticed him walking up to the concrete bag. w/o checking it out first, he decided to give it a good swift shin kick... The look that came over his face was priceless. Wish I had a camera. But, of course, he had to act like nothing out of the ordinary had occurred, all while limping over to the speed bag to work hands... :) Ray Terry rterry@idiom.com --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues are available via ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com.
