The 5 reference points that you list are as I have been taught so I'm glad to have this cleared up. As a publisher myself I understand how easy it is to miss contradictions in text and illustrations! I really appreciate the information about the Ilustrisimo influence on the Inosanto blend coming from Regino and not Tatang - that was something I really didn't know. I really appreciate the assistance. Best wishes, Jamie -----Original Message----- From: Bakbakan@aol.com [mailto:Bakbakan@aol.com] Sent: 01 November 2002 23:47 To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Ilustrisimo numbering system Jamie wrote>I wondered do any ED members practice KI and would there care to put me straight on this? You are correct to point out the contradiction. There may have been oversight on that segment because the 5 reference points I learned from Masters Rey Galang and Topher Ricketts are: 1-Diagonal Forehand Collarbone 2-Horizontal Backhand Elbow / Midsection 3-Horizontal Forehand Elbow / Midsection 4-Diagonal Backhand Collarbone 5-Midsection Thrust Keep in mind that the Ilustrisimo influence in Inosanto Blend was not from Tatang but his uncle Regino. Personal interpretations may be conveyed with even the slightest changes like the numbering system. Yours in the Arts, Guro John G. If they feel that you are endangering their kids and they let their kids wander away from their side, it tells me that they are being a PITA and want to try to intimidate you in some way to get you to bow to their wills... I teach my people in parks and in other public venues to introduce my students to different environments.. But, I am always careful not to draw attention to my self or my students. If people start closing around, I start working on empty hand applications, that way they aren't interrupting the training that we are doing... If you are with Rudy S., you have a good instructor, I had the ability to work out with his group when I was in san antonio on my last trip there in 2001... You know if those parents also watch in what their children are watching as Cartoons then you can understand the masive quantities of viliolence done. Look at the kid in Colorado that shot up the school. Personally it happen to me too, and I simply replies it is a public park and please join me. Afer relating to the parents that I am not only doing culture, that also train law enforcement to guard against the common criminal. I simply said, "you do want to have Law Enforcement protect you, dont you? Normally after simple discussions, I was left alone (22 years ago in Colorado) Most folks do not understand why it is that you swing a stick, so they go by their reaction and gut feeling too. So maybe talk to the parents if approach again, maybe it will help as it did in my case. If not, O well, a public park, just think no one think of a baseball or footbal being thrown, it is the american culture. I belief no one will say too much, untill the ball accidently got array and hit someone when thrown and not caught and it flew by the one trying to catch. This just a taught and always remember, lots of people will shut things out if not understood it is human nature to do it. So, in the case you described, they most likely did not understand Philipine culture. Hope full you can win them to your side next time, just think potential student to learn Pekita Tersia Pak Vic << Greetings to all, Today was a first for me. As an instructor of PekitiTirsia Kali I often train my students in a public park. But today was the very first time that I was approached by a couple who happened to have 2 kids asking me to please stop because I was endangering there children. As I asked the couple why was I endangering them, there reply was, that there is enough violence in america and that for there children to witness it in a park was beyond reproach. The ironic thing was, while they were speaking to me there children had wandered some 30 feet from them, and when I enlightened them to this fact there answer was there OK there just playing. It amazes me that people would take the time out to chastise people for doing something they love, in a public park with no offense to any one teaching and learning a wonderful self preservation skill. My only thought toward them was pity for they are the people who walk through this world with blinders on saying to them selves "It wont happen to me". But alas it happens to anyone violence and debauchary are not very picky in our day in age it will come for the week and the strong, and in my humble opinion if we can train our mind, body and spirit perhaps we'll be better prepaired to survive an onslaught of crime. I am wondering if this happened to any other instructors? Thanks for your time Mike B, SanAntonio Texas PTK-Pitbulls P.S. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I wanted to comment on your article on training in a park. I have done lots of training in parks, Eskrima, Tai-chi, Silat etc... At first I was hesitant to do so because people might think we were showing off etc... I thought it over and thought hell if people can play foot ball, tackle frisbee, or what ever else they choose in parks why shouldnt we as martial artist be able to train in parks ? Of course we have used some discretion and common sense but for the most part have really enjoyed training out doors. We have got the occasional snicker from some people but thats about it. I figure if people dont like it its there problem. Im doing it because I like to be out doors not because I am trying to put on a demonstration. K. Every semester I would be confronted by some nieve freshman who would preach to me some version of "Gee, can't we defend ourselves without hurting anyone's feelings?" I would always explain that while avoiding bad situations, learning to diffuse volital situations, etc, was always prefferable, it was not always possible. Usually that would do it for the kids, but the real icing on the cake came when I was called into the dean's office one semester. The dean was a nice guy, but knew nothing of MA. (After all, the MA department was under the college of science?!?!?) He nervously explained to me that one of my students had some bruising on her arm from and activity in my class. I told him that it was normal to get an occasional bruise during a PE class. He didn't see it my way. He asked that "for safety and legal reasons" I teach MA without any striking, kicking, throwing, joint locking, grappling, gouging, or weapon usage. After all, this was a Christian University. I asked how I was supposed to do that without renaming my classes to "Politely Asking People to Stop 105," and "Cowering in Fear 308." While the humor of that was somewhat lost on him, he seemed understanding that I could not teach self defense in good conscience under his terms. I also reminded him that Jesus used violence when it was called for. (...Made a whip of chords & drove tax collectors from the temple.) I asked him to trust me that I wasn't a hardcore millitant instructor and wouldn't get the university sued. I even invited him to come to my classes. I continued to teach as I saw fit. He never showed up to class. Several months later I was informed that the MA program was cut due to "budgeting reform." -Nat Nickele, Phoenix, AZ __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
