I could only wish I had had concerned parents approaching me - at least there is an opportunity to educate. Teaching in parks, we would occasionally get either drunks or guys wanting to tell me their "two-fisted tales of modern combat." And all you can do is smile vaguely, thank them for their time and mention that you really do need to get back to class. I'm sorry to hear this. I've done my share of park workouts. While I've never been approached by parents in this manner, I have fielded questions and comments from bystanders and park officials. I'll just offer you my support. I would tell the parents that they're welcome to watch or avoid a legal activity and that they have a right to comment but not to interfere. As for park officials, I have used the following line a few times "We're rehearsing for our demonstration at the {Filipino/ Asian-American} Cultural Festival next month." I find a smile works wonders. --__--__-- Message: 4 From: "Bob Barnum" To: Date: Mon, 4 Nov 2002 17:20:10 -0500 Subject: [Eskrima] Uniforms Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Greetings everyone, A while ago there were some posts on the list about custom eskrima uniforms (i.e. color choices and larger sizes). I can't seem to find that info anymore and was wondering if someone could either repost it or email me directly with the info. Thanks in advance. Bob Barnum --__--__-- Message: 5 From: "Bobbe Edmonds" To: Date: Mon, 4 Nov 2002 15:15:47 -0800 Subject: [Eskrima] There is a difference Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net On the subject of training in parks: This world is a violent place, period. Sheltering children from it will make them horribly unprepared for it when confronted with it in life. Just as they are depending on adults to teach them right from wrong, they are also dependant on us to instill a realistic sense of the world around them. You can't just ignore it & it will go away. I live in Seattle, ignoring ANYTHING out here can get you killed faster than blue blazes. The children were not witnessing "Violence", they were witnessing "Training". I have to ask myself where the line would be for parents such as those. Would they approach a traffic accident & rebuke the victims, saying there is already too much death in the world, don't expose our children to any more? I agree with Karol Krauser, if people can play tackle football, let rottwielers run loose from chains (happens in a park I jog at) I should think healthy expressions of combat would be just as accepted. The next time you see those folks, ask them to take the rose-tinted glasses off. Be ready to administer first aid when life whomps them upside the head. Train Hard! I was at a really cool park where there was a JKD group working out. They brought an air brushed sign to put out saying the name of their group etc. The participants were in uniform T-shirts as well. There was no doubt what they were about. Remove the sign and T-shrits, and it probably would have looked like a bunch of bangers. Yes, it is still a free country, but these little things probably stop a lot of hassle.
