In many ways it is integeral. For myself, when I started practicing FMA I lived 30 klms from town and another 5 klms down a dirt road. While I could make it to class on a weekly basis, I had no training partners. All my conditioning was done solo. My technical practice was done on a solo basis. This led to a great deal of introspection. Devoid of outside "noise", but with the guidance of my teacher during the week I was free to, if you like, meditate on the tasks before me. I must stress though, the guidance of a teacher, "uncle" or "cousin" is paramount to this process or state. Without the input and cautionary hand of an experienced "elder", the experiments, theorems and strategies deised can begin to go horribly wrong. In addition to this ego can come into play and furhter hamper the player into a state that can take years to recover from. If at all! Go on the digest's, forums and lists. Email people and ask questions. Watch videos and take notes as well as, and most importantly physically practice your art.Really Live what you are doing! And ask for help, there is alot of people who will help you. Good Luck, Phil --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "Kyle Craig" To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Date: Thu, 07 Nov 2002 15:31:57 +0000 Subject: [Eskrima] (no subject) Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Gordon- I too have recently started my Eskrima training (9 months) and find many benefits to solo training. Solo training, I feel, enhances my spirit more than anything. Also, you know what you need to work on and excel in and with solo training you can take full advantage of that. There are also other aspects of Eskrima that I feel work better in a solo format, such as footwork, formwork, and some stickfighting. I'll even sometimes attach rotan sticks to the wall and practice different entry maneuvers. Practicing like this I can go all day. However, you can never get the real feel for combat without having practicing with a partner. Training with someone else, I've found, increases sensitivity, awareness, and being able to conform your mind to real life situations. These are just a few of the things that I've found that work for me. So in the end it really just depends what you want to get out of your workout. I hope that I've made some kind of sense here. _________________________________________________________________ Tired of spam? Was it a success? How many spectators were there? Who and what systems finally demonstrated? How long was it? Any special guests? Any highlights? Were goals accomplished? Do you recommend other members try to organize and hold one in their areas? Here are some options I would suggest. Work all the double stick patterns you have with a variety of sticks. Hardwood sticks of different weights and light weight sticks as well. Vary your speads and tempos. When doing single stick training work both hands and work switching back and forth. Work on shadow boxing using your sticks. Try to flow as if you were going against an opponent. If you have the space construct a tire dummy. These can be invaluble when working speed, technique and power. You can also get one heck of a cardio workout working on these for rounds while building your time up. Again try and use both hands. Break down patterns such as Punyo Sombrada and Box pattern by yourself and work on the footwork they involve as well as your checking hand. If you can afford a green man dummy get one of those as well. Most of them are able to actually hold stick and other weapons so you can practice disarms and locks. This should give you a place to start. If you need any more ideas please E-mail directly. Best wishes in training Karol Krauser --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? I did a quick search on the Internet and I found a site listing Mark Mikita as a Master Instructor in Philippine Tribal Arts among other arts. Can any member provide more information on him as to what styles he learned and who were his instructors. The website only had general information. The article is well written and offers a lot of good points especially about "inherent diseases" which is a good testimonial about Guro Mikita's knowledge. The only real flaw I could find in the article would be the first picture in the article which I hope is for entertainment or advertising purposes and not for practical value. Respectfully, Al Sardinas Student of Garimot System of Arnis --__--__-- Message: 6 From: "al sardinas" To: Date: Thu, 7 Nov 2002 10:46:43 -0500 Subject: [Eskrima] "The Truth About the Presas'" or Roots Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Also in the January 2003 issue of Inside Kung-Fu there is a letter written by Guro Jose G. Paman titled "The Truth About the Presas'". In this letter Guro Paman talks about the controversy, confusion and basically rumors regarding the Presas brothers - Remy, Ernesto and Roberto. He mentions that the rumors of a bitter feud between the late Remy and Ernesto were widly exagerated. And that GM Ernesto has consistently acknowledged his brother in many of his published books. Guro Paman points out that "It is no secret that all three Presas brothers shared the same essential roots in their early arnis education." and though they each chose unique paths, they all should be equally admired for their contributions to the FMA's that exists today. Well, this article got me thinking. First of all about the rumor feud, I learned from a high source that it was only a misunderstanding and nothing more. Secondly, about the state of Modern Arnis, right now as I see it there are many branches out there that are claiming to be Master, Grand Master, Datu, etc. which I can accept. But how can these branches grow without any root? Like a massive tree with small and large branches, once it loses its roots only one thing will happen, it will die unless it grows another root. I think it is time for the Modern Arnis people out there to grow another root. And I think that Grandmaster Ernesto Presas would be the logical and perfect choice for the people out there who lost their master. I'm not saying throw everything that you learned out but acknowledge your uncle if Remy was truly your father. If you do this, your art will grow, your knowledge will grow, your organization will grow, you will grow and you will have the support of an organization that has strong roots.
