I am so busy at works. Well, I met Proffessor, way back on 1974, when I was 11 years old, I did an Arnis Demonstration in front of President Ferdinand Marcos Birthday Sept 11. 1974. He is with Willy Annang and Willy Madla (Modern Arnis highest ranking at that time under Remy) I dont see Roland Dantes at that time, Remy's wife Rosemary was there too. He came up to me after my demonstration and he said, "you are very good". He gave me a copy of his new published book, the pink cover title "Modern Arnis" (Philippine Martial Art) Stick Fighting. He said practiced from the book, and he will promote me to a Blckbelt. Well, I did study the book, and notice to his history that he founded "Modern Arnis" on 1969 after bringing his family to Manila and founded the (NAKO) National Amateur Karate Organization. Then Remy pursue to revive the theart of Arnis then he call it "Modern Arnis. He also founder Philippine Arnis Assocition, and promoter of Arnis in Palarong Pambansa on 1972 which is Arnis is highlight of the events. His first experimental student in Modern Arnis is the (National College of Physical Education) NCPE Special Modern Arnis Class on 1970 nad the NCPE Second Experimentation is 1971 including Lorenzo Presas and Mary Ann Presas. NCPE Third Experimentation of Modern Arnis class is 1971, includes Willy Annang to this class. So 1957 is not accurate date of the founding of Modern Arnis, But well said Rocky, I know you dont meant to make mistake, just giving the readers a correct information. In regards of the mis-up of the brothers, I dont want to comment on that, is not my place to talk about a family business. Remy loves his brother and I am sure GM Ernesto loves his Kuya Remy more. Just want to add my 5 cent on this tpics. Elrik put a dozen tigers in one room and kept the peace. Congratulations for pulling off a unique Filipino event. The event slots proceeded smoothly and varied from Filipino skits (Blind Princess) to style demos to direct instruction and, finally, point and continuous sparring. I had a great time and would highly recommend partipcation in his next event. --__--__-- Message: 3 From: Ray Terry To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net (Eskrima) Date: Fri, 8 Nov 2002 19:36:24 -0800 (PST) Subject: [Eskrima] Side folders ? They say that a lot of FMA grandmasters have anting-antings or agimats (amulets and charms). The charms do work, but they have one thing they take away from you if you want them to work for you--that is, your money-making ability. In short, you will NEVER MAKE ENOUGH MONEY to even live decently for as long as you have what they call the "armadura" (armor) given you by an oracion (chant), anting-anting/agimat (amulet) that works. Tatang Ilustrisimo is one good example. He never made enough money and was dirt poor because, as they say, of his oracion that was so invincible. Tuhon Leo Gaje lately told us this. Romy Macapagal would vouch for this. 2. I am addressing this to the Johnaleen@msn.com girl. Please email me a picture of your tire setup. Tuhon Bill, IMHO, I think its more of a generational gap and maybe a form of cultural displacement. In the days of old in the Philippines, I think things were much more relaxed. The Eskrimador master may have been looked upon as someone disserving of respect above and beyond that of just a stick fighter, perhaps like the Samurai in Japan, Monk in China. When they came to America our culture dictates a different set of values. Money is more our way of getting the essentials we need in life. You can't stickfight for food ( all though I have a great story about one of my students standing by an off ramp in Detroit with a sign that said will stick fight for food just for laughs ) anyways the American with proper up bringing will give the Eskrimador Master the respect he deserves in the realm of teacher student or senior junior, but rarely does it go further. Also unfortunately the American way quite often seems to be what can you do for me or what have you done for me lately. And when it comes to business its a dog eat dog world. I have heard of American students stealing club insignias from their GM's by copyrighting it. In the Philippines no one would have ever thought about doing something like that. So an uneducated ( probably because he was training harder than we ever have, instead of going to school) GM in America on his own may find himself used by people in stead of respected and looked out for. The flip side is that sometimes when these not so well educated, humble people try to be business like, their easy going nature and humbleness ( is that a word ) will cause them to do some outrageously often crazy business moves. Also this lack of respect towards them sometimes keep some truly awesome masters from teaching. I think with the newer younger generation of Gm's coming over, and the American born Master, Gm's and Tuhons, all of whom are more educated and worldly people you will see some stronger more professionally run organizations. And for anyone that is a student reading this remember, what your teacher teaches you is privileged, it is the accumulation of years and even generations of hard work and sacrifice, it shouldn't be taken for granted it should be received with honor, and remember honor and respect is always a two way street. I put a package together for Remy once out lined basic plan for an organization. ( not how or what he should teach) just how to set up a functional organization, complete with 401k, health care packages for himself and even his students who joined the organization. How he could have bought a building, leased it to his organizations took the dividends and dump them into some tax free municipals or taxed differed investments. Everything a real organization should offer its members. But he just shrugged it off. When I heard Remy was sick I just thought to myself man I hope he finally got some health insurance, long term care, and hopefully something for his young kids. These are things you need to think about in America. This is a little off topic but it ties in I think. About a year ago, I started a thread about how now a days far to many people don't think its an honor to train with an instructor but rather its the instructors duty. I have had students that got mad at me because I couldn't accommodate their schedule. When I was learning I made every effort to train when ever my instructor had the time. I considered myself lucky to train with that person. After posting that thread the majority of the response were the instructors or guys trying to make a living teaching, telling me how lucky they felt to be someone's instructor, how fortunate they felt that someone wants to learn what they have and basically how they will always be there for their students. Well yes its nice to be appreciated, but once again its a two way street. I personally will not go to far out of my way for new students. You show loyalty and respect, and I will give the same more and more as time goes on. I remember my first day in college ( YES CRAFTY I is edumicated, I can envision your smart ass, pounding out some wise crack on the key board right now :-) the instructor said this is not High School, you don't have to be here and I don't have to teach you, so if you want to screw off and waste your time I really don't give a shit! Any ways I am not always happy to be someone's instructor, I'd rather be proud of the level of ability they reach under me. And Dan Wrote: >Hey Rocky, > I gotta applaud your post. I absolutely agree with most of it. And your >spelling wasn't to bad either. This must be a sign of growth. :-) Oh great what are you and Crafty a tag team now?? Man with friends like you, Ray, Crafty and Doc, a guy could get a complex!!! I'll have you know that my mind is an whirlwind of endless strands of transient thoughts, cascading into an endless cataclysm of serenity and enlightenment, that is incomprehensible and unattainable to mere mortals. So Dan, & Crafty & Ray and who ever else feels the irremediable need to attack my spelling inabilities, just remember when an individual such as me has a mind that is so truculent in its search for the unfathomable knowledge of universal enlightenment, hey I am bound to mess up on the petty stuff like spelling give me a break.
