Hi, 1957 is the official date that Remy referred to as the founding of Modern Arnis back in Negros. Remy used this date, because when I saw him in 1997, he said: "now Modern Anris turned 40" So Rocky was right. I'm probably not the best guy to respond to your questions re: the thyroid changes and treatment that you've been undergoing ... but here are a couple of comments that may help.  For sure, the ++weight side of things might be related to underactive thyroid.  I've just done a quick browse of ye olde pathology text and on first pass have seen nothing like what the med-guy diagnosed, i.e., the "unstable thyroid".  Thyroid problems are usually described as all one or the other, under- or over-active.  Summarizing info from "The Pathological Basis of Disease" no clear picture exists for a relationship btwn variances or changes in thyroid structure  and thyroid function.  Didn't find anything addressing thyroid injury in particular, or potentials for damage from boxing or choking. Thyroid function is related to many enzymes and other hormones.  Thyroid hormone increases many different enzymes, and vitmains are parts of some of the enzymes or co-enzymes.  As a result ++thryoid hormone also causes ++need for vitamins.   We get into some potential messes once we start to frick around with the hormones directly ... just MHO.  Oh yeah, re: testosterone ... the line "when your body is missing one thing ... it will deplete other chemicals to try to maintain proper body weight" doesn't help our thinking :-)  Any physiological imbalance can throw off the natural balance of a lot of other things ... but it is the DIRECT ACTION of thyroid hormone on the PITUITARY AND OTHER ENDOCRINE GLANDS which does a job on all the stuff related to testosterone and other hormones. Nutrition:  The high protein / low carb way has some problems, for example ... increased potential for kidney stones and gout. I'm no expert, but I'd ask the med if there are any other tests that he would be willing to perform to "refine" his diagnosis.  The secretion of thyroid hormone is controlled by the hypothalamus and pituitary.  Sometimes we have to tell physicians what they need to do :-)  A good rule for them is to always listen to the patient (nobody knows everything and the patient should always have his/her needs #1).  I'd want to know without a doubt what the CAUSE was/is.  Western medical 'practice' is symptom-oriented ... treating symptoms can hide CAUSE.  If the med is unwilling to 'refine' the diagnosis I'd ask him/her to refer me to someone who will.  An endocrinologist sounds right to me. See the Endocrinology Guru. Be well friend.   __________________________________________________________________ The NEW Netscape 7.0 browser is now available. Well I have seen my doctor a number of times in the past and he always just says the same thing "exorcise" Well I can exorcise all I want an deat healthy and do all the right things, and my weight might go down 50 to 75 lbs in a month or two or it can go up 50 to 75 lbs. Well I finally did something I should have done years ago, I went to a specialist. After weeks of blood test after blood test, he diagnose me with an unstable thyroid. It will swing from being way over active to way under active. He gave me some medicine an damn what a difference my energy level is up and in a week I lost almost 10 pounds. My question to Mik or anyone with a medical back ground is, is this a common thing. And can you damage your thyroid from being hit quite often in the neck or throat ( I boxed quite a bit ) or from being choked ( I grappled a lot with my dad ) I asked my Doc. but he really never had anyone ask that before. And also he said my testosterone level was two low for my age 36 and he thought it might be because when your body is missing one thing ( like under active thyroid ) it will deplete other chemicals to try to maintain proper body weight. Does this sound right?? And one last thing he highly recommended that I go on a low carb, high protein diet, after about a month of monitoring the meds he has me on. He said he doesn't feel and he is hoping that dieting will not be a major issue, and if I keep dropping weight like I have in the last 10 days he is right. But if I have to he recommends low carbs. Any recommendations." ----------------------- Commenting on other peoples' medical management is always fraught with danger if one has not seen the patient oneself. In this case I offer following comments, not to denigrate your physicians but more to encourage you to ask the right questions including a possible second opinion. 1) Weight fluctuation is well described and thought to be undesirable (yo-yo diets etc.). 2) The thyroid condition you described is unlikely. One can go from overactive thyroid to underactive, but I have never heard of throid swinging back and forth spontaneously. 3) What is the medicine you were given? We had a guy here who was treating people (successfully!) with large doses of thyroid hormone. Yes, you will lose weight and feel great but also risk heart failure, arrhythmias and osteoporosis to mention a few. 4) I have never heard of chronic thyroid damage as a result of trauma. 5) What evidence was there for low testosterone? It is a bugger to measure. There are at least three methods, the most reliable is the least available. 6) You said yourself that you can lose 50-75 lb easily. How do you know that your recent weight loss is not due to the diet you are on? The Atkins diet is very effective in losing weight, but there are other reservation about its effects on health. Weight control is a vexing problem in which I have unfortunately a very personal interest. I do not swing my weight the way you do but find that any weight loss is accompanied by a muscle loss rather than fat loss. Why this should be so, Lord only knows. I feel that modern medicine is at the stage of managing obesity, where it was with diabetes before the discovery of insulin. Good luck and I hope you find a solution. If you do, let us know the specifics.
