Depending on how the word is used it could translate as "to scrape something off" as in cleaning. But more likely if used casually it would translate to "chalice" or "tall cup". Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hello, I don't know if you've had any training or not but here's a place you can start right there in Cebu City. The Grandmaster is Dionisio Canete. Doce Pares International World Headquarters 30 Eagle Street, Sto.Niņo Village Banilad, Cebu City 6000 Philippines (63-32)346-0433 (63-32)344-3028 If you haven't had any training, I would suggest that you get some before you open up a group, especially in Cebu City. There is so much talent to learn from there, it would be a mistake not to seek it out. Also by "All Filipino Martial Arts Club" I hope you don't mean to exclude foreigners or balikbayan. The FMA serve as great ambassadors to the world, demonstrating the depth and breadth of Filipino culture and the ingenuity of the Filipino people. To exclude others would be counterproductive. Good luck. There is a really nice treatment of the history of the system and of GM Illustrisimo. The photos are well done and easy to follow. This book got me fired up about training again. Each technique is illustrated with a stick, sword, and espada y daga variation where applicable. All in all, I would have to say that this book is an excellent introductory text book for Kalis Illustrisimo. Like all "Secrets" of the martial arts books it is no substitute for real instruction, but it can add some interesting tools to your existing skills. If anyone knows of a Bakbakan member or school in Central Great Lakes area (IN, MI, OH, or IL ) please let me know. I am quite taken with this system and have a desire to formalize my education. mabuhay ang eskrima Brandon ===== Better to be hated for who you are than loved for who you are not. __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? My first bit of advice comes from a leadership principle found in the gospels. If you want to be a true leader, first be a servant. Don't think any job is below you. I would add: The best way to learn an organization is from the ground up. Be willing to start small and grow slow. True leaders lead from the front. You have to give loyalty in order to receive loyalty. Your ultimate goal as a teacher is to produce students who are better than you. I would ask you: Why should people come join your organization? What can you give them that other organizations in your area do not? What is the difference between a MA school and a MA organization? What extra things will your members expect of an organization? As for some immediate things you can do: Organize and list all the techniques in your system as well as which techniques are required for each rank. Post this info on your school wall and give it out to all students. This helps keep everyone (teachers as well as students) honest. Teachers can't dangle "secret" techniques in front of students to get more money and students can't claim that they are certified in more technique than what is contained in their rank. And remember: You want to run a MA organization, not a cult. Your members can get up and leave any time they want. What will keep them is the quality of your instruction and more importantly, the quality of your character.
