Worth repeating: My first bit of advice comes from a leadership principle found in the gospels. If you want to be a true leader, first be a servant. Don't think any job is below you. I would add: The best way to learn an organization is from the ground up. Be willing to start small and grow slow. True leaders lead from the front. You have to give loyalty in order to receive loyalty. Your ultimate goal as a teacher is to produce students who are better than you. I would ask you: Why should people come join your organization? What can you give them that other organizations in your area do not? What is the difference between a MA school and a MA organization? What extra things will your members expect of an organization? As for some immediate things you can do: Organize and list all the techniques in your system as well as which techniques are required for each rank. Post this info on your school wall and give it out to all students. This helps keep everyone (teachers as well as students) honest. Teachers can't dangle "secret" techniques in front of students to get more money and students can't claim that they are certified in more technique than what is contained in their rank. And remember: You want to run a MA organization, not a cult. Your members can get up and leave any time they want. What will keep them is the quality of your instruction and more importantly, the quality of your character. You mentioned you are a practitioner of the FMA already for quite sometimes? That is good, make a flyer, print your proposal, give it all to your Kabataan Baranggay member and let them distribute to all targeted member, and let see how is they will response to it, and start from there. You dont need to be a Grandmaster or Master to Organized such a organization. Start with something and then plants your seedling, cultivate the plant to grow, bare fruit and harvest later. I understand your issue, I used to be the President of Kabataan Baranggay in my Baranggay before I got the opportunity to go Abroad. I used to teach Arnis in Police Baranggay or Tanod Barrio, and we just practiced the basic, nothing else straight forward, strike defense and conuter. We work few controlling techniqurs and knife disarm and gun disarm. It might help you also to talk to few Eskrimador on your area to be the " Board of Adviser" and asked them for help you guide all member to the basic understanding of "Code of Coduct as Arnisador or Eskrimador". Guide you and your member to be the best citizen there is, in your area, and be the role model of the youth and adult alike, in you area. This will be a non political attempt to share this information with readers worldwide and establish some form of order and progression as to who has been a part of the art and for how long. Due to the nature of Professor Presas' travels and different phases of the art, the lineage will be broken down into Generations. Generation 1 includes those involved in founding of Modern Arnis, this list if fairly complete now. Generation 2 includes those that were a part of the group during the NARAPHIL era. Generation 3 will be those involved with Professor when he arrived here in the U.S. early 70's. Generation 4 will be those involved from late 70's until his passing. All individuals will be concidered for inclusion, but ranking directly from Professor is required to be in the Lineage Chart. Criteria will include Name, Rank, date received, Country, time in the art, certification directly from Remy A. Presas. No major statements will be listed with each name, if you have people in mind and would like to include specific information for status of position and recognition for inclusion it may help in deciding who will be listed but it is not a who has done what article only a listing of potential lineage practitioners to be included in the article or chart. This is a big request, especially to keep non political, but like I said it is for a Major Publication and only a certain amount of time will be allowed to voice your contribution and list those you feel stand within the perimeter mentioned. I will confirm information with other instructors who may not even like or respect each other but I think it is important enough to open the door for all to be listed who have contributed support to Modern Arnis and Professor Presas. If an individual has passed away he could be included as well if his contribution to the art is valid, he will be listed as deceased but part of the seniority lineage. This opportunity may never come again so speak now or forever complain! You may list the names here, or e-mail directly to kellyworden@attbi.com Thank you for your input... I don't believe I've worked (as in wood working) with hickory. Is it a hard and brittle wood as is kamagong or a wood that is difficult to break and crack more like bahi?
