Bahi is the timber/wood obtained from the Philippine palm tree, i.e. 'ANAHAW'. if u are in the Philippines, u can inquire for the anahaw ....and it's understood by the natives in all parts of the islands. just a my 2 cents... mert altares --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "rocky pasiwk" To: Date: Sun, 24 Nov 2002 12:58:12 -0500 Subject: [Eskrima] Re Hard woods Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net In regards to hard wood, I have never really bothered to learn much about different woods, Even after 27 years of eskrima I just use what ever I have. I know about the more rings the stronger the rattan and all that stuff. However I do have a stick Remy gave me some 20 years ago, he called it Iron wood its incredibly dense & heavy it seems stronger than almost anything else I have come across. He said it belonged to his grandfather. My question: Is it really Iron wood, is there such a wood or is it something else. Its very dark almost black. He said it had been hardened. I am just curious as to what it might be. But don't hit it with power against anything super hard (like my head), cause in addition to cracking open my head it will also probably break or crack the stick. Not really what you want to do with something of obvious value and containing fond memories. I do not know very much about the gentleman but he makes some interesting points about the ongoing slash vs. point debate in knife fighting. Possibly people who know more about knife fighting on the digest may like to give their comments. My two pence worth is this I have been cut once and punctured once whilst in the army. Both times it was during a small riot and both times I was on crowd control trying to keep people apart. The slash was a minor cut across the lower back with what I think was a craft knife, I did not see who did it. The second time was a small home made dart, which came out of the crowd and stuck in my upper arm with a THUD. Both times I was able to carry on but the stab wound hurt the most. That's my very limited experience. So Mr Keating comments seem to make sense to me. Anyone have a take on stabbing as opposed to slashing wounds? As regards the dog brothers comment I learnt a lot more that just the stick hurts during my brief spell at full contact stick fighting. Regards Richard. --__--__-- Message: 6 From: Ray Terry To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net (Eskrima) Date: Sun, 24 Nov 2002 17:00:37 -0800 (PST) Subject: [Eskrima] Maori arts ? Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net While traveling to and around Hawai'i last week I read a book on Captain James Cook's travels. I figured that was apropos (howz that for a word, Rock? :) since he 'remains' there in the Sandwich Islands (as he named them). During his travels around and about the Pacific's islands he visited and charted New Zealand. The people he encountered there, the Maori, he found to be extremely war like. Always spoiling for a good battle... Anyone know anything about or if the martial arts of the Maori still exist?
