Not sure that many really think that of Mr. Keating, but he always seems to have an opinion, reasonable or not. Unfortunately that seems to be the key to getting your name in front of the public via the mainstream MA media. > 1) As I understand it stab with a point is more damaging than a slash > particularly with a small knife where the small length of the cutting edge > is unlikely to produce a significant (that is immediately disabling) wound. > Thus a small knife is preferrably used in an ice-pick grip to give the stab > more effectiveness. Distance. Deflection. A basic block. All are reasonable reactions. Defanging the snake is another approach, but depends on a great many things going right to be effective. > 2) If using the hooking technique on the limb (or another target, like the > back of the neck) I understand it is preferrable to have the knife with edge > "in" rather than edge "out". Edge out does not work as well, but it can work. But I typically pick my folder so that it feels comfortable in whatever grip I end up with. One never really knows how, or even if, they'll be holding their carry knife when the feces hits the oscillator. Many of the various locks on production knives can fail. Best to check the one you are about to buy to make sure it locks right and tight. i.e. some of the production liner locks don't quite go over far enough. Also if your hand is shaped like mine, a lockback model (e.g. Spyderco Endura) can open when being 'white-knuckled'. > 3) If stabbing is the preferred technique for achieving rapid disability in > an opponent, why were the three most preferred weapons for close combat in > WW II the kukri, the entrenching tool and the corpsman's axe. Even more so when one untrained person is encountering another untrained person. > This is perhaps not such an academic question: if one were to train for home > defense in a situation where use of firearms is impossible or illegal, one > ought to concentrate on what is most effective and equip oneself > accordingly. Having your "sword arm" chapped off is probably more immediately disabling than a stab in the abdomen, unless you are ambidextrous and train in that fashion. Other comments???
