What's interesting is that the one and only >seminar I attended with Jim Keating appeared to my non-expert eyes to be >totally FMA based. We did straight-up FMA basic stickfighting for quite >some >time before we got out the training knives. That was about 1.5 - 2 years >ago. I didn't see or hear anything that I would call critical of the FMA's. He is trying exceptionally hard to distance himself from anything Oriental - muay Thai? Oh, they train using Western methods. Kali? The Phillipines were run by the Spanish, so it's Western too. It smells of marketing. Hock Hochheim is a good example - in his Filipino curriculum, it is called "hubud-lubud" but in his Knife Congress, the same drill is "block, pass, pin". While he recognizes the worth of the drill, he also sees that his target audience won't appreciate having to learn foreign terms too. In the 1970's, we were all going gaa-gaa for anything that had a hint of the Orient. The pendulum has reached the opposite end now, where it must sound "American", complete with black/camo fatigues. For some of them I'm sure it was as easy as pulling their old 1980's ninja uniform out of the bottom of the closet and slapping on a pair of combat boots. The guy clearly isn't wired correctly. In fact, if you want to turn a negative into a positive, watch his videos (the bullwhip video is a standout)...pretty amusing stuff to put it mildly. You get the impression that no one was willing to teach him too much as it looks like a lot of his stuff was made up as he went along. To be fair though, he's not completely without knowledge...but a little knowledge can be dangerous. Best to all, Steve Kohn --__--__-- Message: 5 From: "al sardinas" To: Date: Thu, 5 Dec 2002 16:06:51 -0500 Subject: [Eskrima] Another Hidden Insult to The Philippines Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net One of my fellow students (a Filipino) has brought to my attention a post that was written in Eskrima digest, Vol 9 #414. In message 2, Patrick Davies wrote "If it weren't for the art the vast majority wouldn't give a flying f*ck about the Phillipinnes would we?" Now I could have a response similar to the caliber of what Marc Denny wrote about the Real Fighting article but I will not. Mr. Davies, let me first give you a response similar to what you wrote - You don't know what the F*CK you are talking about. OOPs, I feel like a 13 year old again in Brooklyn. Let me rephrase what I wrote. Sir, your statement shows a general disrespect and lack of knowledge. It seems that you only have brushed the surface of your art. For your argument's sake, let's remove the art from the Philippines. What do we have left? A beautiful country with beautiful people created by God. A description that could be for any country in the world. The only limitation to this is what you think and not what you know. Maybe you are a racist and/or atheist. I don't know and it really doesn't matter but it would make sense not to insult the motherland of the art to which many of us and hopefully you are devoted to. I hope I'm wrong about you.
