Some might want this, and Crafty asked that I post it. The Kukkido Martial Arts Studio's phone number is (310) 316-6212 For those who may not have heard, the seminar runs from 10:30 to 4:00, with an hour and fifteen minute lunch break the Studio is at 800 Torrance Boulevard #104, in Redondo Beach Cost is $75.00 I'm looking forward to it! Martial arts are supposed to open your mind and make you grow. Fortunately the Philippinos who kindly accepted to teach us their arts do not have this colonial mentality. I for myself, even without the arts, would give several huge "flying f*ck's" about the Philippines and returnb to these wonderful islands whenever I can! -- Dr. C. And my conclusion is the stab vs. Slash scenario, needs to be filed under the old what ever the situation calls for category. I have never been in a real knife fight I have been stabbed twice and slashed 5 or 6 times. I can tell you this out side of the obvious kill shots, i.e a stab into the heart, or thru the eye into the brain, kidneys or a number of other areas or a slash across a major artery, its been my experience that the pain and or disabling factor of the attack, quite often depends on your level of adrenalin production. I had someone in a fight stab/slash me across the ribs with one of those hook shaped linoleum knife ( I think that's what they are for) anyways it got loged in my rib and when he pull back on it it pulled and kind of splintered the rib. And to be honest I felt it but it didn't real slow me down it just pissed me off. The same goes for a scalpel that got stuck in the bone of my upper arm. On the other hand I was witness to a man who got beat up, and I knelt down over him to see if he was ok needed to go the hospital or what not, and some guy walked up behind me and stuck a knife in my back just above my kidney, but not two far in, may be .25 in it really didn't even bleed that much, but man it felt like I was going to die!!! My stomach got quezy and everything. I think it had to do with my body not being in a fighting mode. The guy who stuck me in the back actually apologized he said he thought I was someone else, boy that sure made me feel better. Anyways one of the biggest mistakes in MA's is the over analyzing of fighting techs and situations. The human body is a real goofy thing. A person could take 3 or 4 slugs from a 9mm to the body and still kick his opponents ass. The same person could be standing on a chair in their kitchen fall bump their head and die. During WWII in New York my father got into a fight in a bar ( fortunately he did not start it, and had a bar full of witnesses) he hit a guy one time, the guy fell back hit the back of his head on the bar and died, it was a freak thing but it happens all the time. In stead of worrying about which is more deadly, I feel its better to worry about which is more effective in any given scenario and use what is most comfortable to you, punch, kick, slap, stab, slash, or grapple when the timing is right. Begging for your life might be the right thing at the right time!!!!! In some sense he seems protective of the Philippines and its natural resources. A sad but true thing about what he said though about caring about the Philippines is its truth. I think that if it weren't for the art, I don't think some of our fellow FMA enthusiasts would even know where the Philippines is. In the US this is truly sad because of the joint history of our countries. I once dated a girl who thought the Philippines was in the Caribbean (she was an honor student too!) but that's another issue in and of itself. I don't think that what Patrick said was necessarily evil or a reflection of his own personal beliefs. I've been to seminars and meetings before and even when I went to the Philippines to study Eskrima, I heard westerners desparaging the people and the country, not alot, but enough to be heard. What Patrick said bothers us because of it's truth. Some people, a large number, wouldn't give a damn about the Philippines if it weren't for the art.
