Hello Douglas, You are absolutely correct and since my file server places the newest message at the top of my received messages, I have to read from today backwards through to earlist unread/saved message.  By the time I got to the original statement, I was hours past having posted my message.  It is too bad that the fellow, Mr. Davis, did not think through his point and write it out in a more tasteful manner - he most certinly could have left out the profanity.  Your taking offense to the statement is well within reason. >Going back to cultural roots of the art, there was a time when the FMA >were not taught to just anyone for fear that things such as this would >happen. Even today people are still selective back home because of not >wanting to teach people who would misuse the art. I know that from experience and I did not then nor do I now disagree with that position on the part of any instructor.  Personally I only have 4 students, 1male and 3 females.  I teach the way I was taught, one on one and two on one  formats.  I have checked out each of my students as best I could for temperment and honesty.  I refuse to allow myself to humiliated by anyone that I have taught, therefore I am exceedingly careful about whom I accept for instruction. >No respect for the art and it's people. Yes my personal brand of FMA is >cultural and ancestral , never said that it was the only way to view the >FMA, My views on the FMA may be different but that's just because I am >proud of my heritage and GLADLY share it to those interested and >without predjudice and I for one do not believe in one true way as I am >still a student of other foreign arts as well. The comment made about not >having the culture was a misquote and I apologize for using Guro Dan's >name by accident and Guro Jun was quick to correct me as I should only >speak for myself. We are essentually on the same page, so there is really no point in carrying this any further.  I asked about the quote from Guro Dan, because I was unsure what point you were trying to make.  Your instructor is correct and you will not have to hear any more from me on that matter.  In house matters need in house corrections.  I am also very aware of your pride in heritage, you should be proud and it will sustain you in times of adversity.  Your pride was very elequentely stated, but never offensive, in my opinion. >The cultural thing, maybe a choice of wrong words, but there is a >difference, I'm not saying it's better or lesser but I guess I don't have the >right description without my words being taken the wrong way, I'll just >use a personal example, when I train with fellow Filipinos we can use our >own language and even site certain experiences that is common to us only >in the Philippines. Please allow me to offer one point that I may have added to the problem.  I should have answered you and Al seperately, taking Al's quote as a singular statement rather than blended them together.  I am sorry for that error in judgement and editing on my part.  Fore-thought on my part was lacking. >Let's say I use a certain cultural dance for example the "naglalatik" and >say guys remeber when we used to do this dance as kids? well think of >the very same movements as attacks and the pieces of coconuts as >targets, This would be unique unto us and would be easier to covey a >certain image or if I say the very same thing to a Chinese or a Brazillian >who in their own culture have their own dances or whatever, it's not the >same. Maybe it's just a language thing or something stemming from a >common rootthat it's easier to express, I 'm sorry I don't know how to >describe this, I won't lie , there is a certain difference that I see when I >train with Filipinos who grew up back home and those who have not, >Now don't get me wrong, I'm not pointing out that it's better or maybe I'm >just trying to say it's easier because we have similar points of refference? >It's getting late and I'm just rambling on and on without a point. Oh well.... You example is excellent and understandable as far as I am concerned.  You are absolutely correct, some things are best and perhaps only really understood in a particular cultural context.  Some things are not transferable from culture to culture, some others are. Good luck, Douglas, perhaps we will be able to meet and talk at some point in the future.
