Anyone have any > advice?? Encountered a similar situation??? I've encountered this with the thick white gi's that are poorly maintained by new students. After noticing a particularly ripe gi, I would address the group at the end of class with a few general tips on maintaining the uniform. It's less embarrassing for the stinker to learn from a group address. "After practice, wash or hang your uniform out to dry as soon as possible. Once the mold sets in, it's hard to eliminate." If that doesn't clear up the situation, I've uttered the following directly to the student: "You may want to use a different detergent for your uniform." Your situation doesn't seem to include the uniform, but I prefer to try blaming the uniform before the person. If none of the above works, I've gone so far as to suggest that the student wear an additional t-shirt or use a stronger anti-perspirant/deodorant. Of course, the usual lime or whatever deodorants + BO are worse than the BO itself. Also, you may want to look into better ventilation in your facility. Consider a strong floor fan. --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "Mark Harrell" To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Date: Sat, 21 Dec 2002 03:02:09 +0000 Subject: [Eskrima] Kali...etc Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I disagree with your comment regarding the term "Kali" being "widely considered to be an American word for Arnis". I think a more accurate statement would be that the term "Kali" is highly controversial and that it is widely considered to be an American word used for Arnis or Eskrima by the people who practice Arnis or Eskrima... especially by those who practice these arts in the Philippines. However, this Kali, Eskrima, or Arnis name thing is such a tired and completely worn out topic that just re-opens the old "what came first, the chicken or the egg? debate again". The topic of "complete" is another ugly debate... The term "complete" means different things to different people so this one is worthless to even debate. I have seen and studied styles of Eskrima and Kali that do not have a so called "complete" mix of empty hands training, locking, kicking, grappling, etc. The actual lesson plan usually depends on who is teaching, their personal background, and what they wish to either explore or share. "Complete" is really a relative term and in my opinion a rather misleading term. Bruce Lee was always an idol for me in my years in the MA's, as I'm sure he was and still is for many. I'm also aware (now) that there's no such thing as a truly flawless idol, and so it brings up the question of whether it is good to idolize people at all. I think this is especially pertinant to the MA's because of their master/student traditions, and the idolized status that we sometimes give our masters/teachers. But maybe that's just part of learning. Jasper Liao __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable.
