Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Leo Salinel, Kabayan,I aggree with you. We are not rejecting the word Kali as Kali-his na pangalan ng (parallel term for) Arnis/Eskrima. We are just making a notation that it is unknown to about 99.9% of Filipinos in the Philippines. We have already agreed as Guro Marc Denny mentioned, "You do your way and we do ours", what's fair is only fair, right? So let's lay this to rest. If not, we may find Kali-mitan (most of the time), even if the topic is only the size of Kali-ngkingan (a pinky) it becomes bigger than the others fingers. No matter how many corrections we make or others make, it's already an accepted word. Kali-mutan na lang natin to ano (let's forget about it, right?) I believe, the more we talk about this we are just giving them a stronger desire to correct us Filipinos, because of political reasons, (hanapbuhay) business is business. For example, if Kali-kot (stir) was the name accepted by the general public, for business purposes as soon as tomorrow, have no doubt my system would be changed to Garimot Kali-kot or even Kali-maw Buno. One thing I must make mention of though, I have no doubt that the people you mentioned are quite educated and well versed in Philippine history and so forth. In fact, I myself may take you up on the offer of referring to any of those you mentioned if I need info in the future. But with all respect to you and those you mentioned (Dr. Ned Nepangue and Prof. Bot Jocano) I must go on to speak in behalf of those masters you mentioned of "no read, no write". Both my father and grandfather were among them. I can only tell you that what they may not have acquired with a formal education, they have acquired through life's first-hand experiences and non-classroom historical storytelling. I believe them to be, as well as other "no read, no write" masters, historians in their own right. Are they adequately well versed in history and critical thinknig? Well, maybe not in the english language, but in their native tongue they could most probably keep up. And yes, we do find "kwentong istir" / "kwentong barbero" to be quite common in filipinos, but among them there are also historians. Anyway, I better stop before we mag"Kali-ntikan"(get you and me in trouble) okay? Kali-limutan ko na lamang ito (let just forget all about it). All in all you put a very imformative explanation of what you are trying to tell them. I enjoy reading your post. I can assure you that every Garimot family will heard, your warm welcome to Guro Glenn on your class. This is what I am dreaming off, about every single FMA, should embrace each other no matter what is the difference of their style. In the pure spirit of brotherhood, and sharing experience to each other weather, just a simple conversation or technical sharing in their particular arts that they practiced. Guro Mike Casto, 4 or years ago, I still remember that day that he attended my small seminar in Guro Nate Defensor in Chicago, he went to a lot of trouble he lost his cell phone in Hotel Intercontinental Chicago where I stayed at. Then an ememrgency came up that he has to leave the very night or next day to go back home. In a short time that we met, I felt he is a true genuine gentlemen believer of brotherhood. I feel sorry that he has to go though a lot trouble like this just to train with other FMA'tist, wow that dedications. Thank you. Please send my warm regards, respect to your mentor and Masters they did an excellent job, its show on you. You are the mirror of your mentors, keep up a good spirit. I also fondly remember that training session in Chicago. It was a lot of fun. Some of the surrounding events were a pain (i.e.: the cell phone, my car getting towed, etc.) ... but it was a pleasure nonetheless. I've always felt that martial artists should all be one big family (not just FMA, but MA in general). There is more than enough knowledge to go around and I'm always willing to try to learn from anyone I can. There are, of course, bad apples in every family (i.e.: specific practitioners) ... but that's only to be expected. It's great to find other people of a like mindset and share back and forth with them. I don't know when I'll make it to FL again ... but I'll definitely make sure to look you guys up the next time I'm in the Miami area.
