These are the cornerstones of the system. They are present in other martial arts too. I understand how these work if one can get to the outside line of the attack. I have difficulty to implement them correctly when applying them inside, e.g. the "block left" against a right punch. My problem is, how do I stop eating the left hand follow up punch? Is it to do with closing the distance or with application of the follow-up technique after the block?" I have no idea what the cross body is. It is a term I am not familiar but probably have seen. In general from your post you understand from outside line. Perhaps the techniques are ment for that only and should not be implemented inside? Second many who can implement one way but not another really can't implement the one way usually because they really don't get the body mechanics. You may think you understand the outside. Try sparring it and see what happens. If you can't implement, there is a problem. Third it is very hard to see what is going on in a video. I don't think you can really learn anything from them. What you can do with them is catalog things you already have properly felt and done and seen so that you do not forget them or can quickly relearn them. But to learn from a video is like wathcing the earth through a telescope thinking the planet makes no sound. Fourth, the left hand follow-up evasion may be best handled by assuming it is waiting and will come. Don't wait for it. Take offensive action. When we do techniques we think in "singularity" and then try to link each event. Instead try to encompass a series of movements like strategy in chess. Doing the stimulus response thing is disasterous. Make him do all the responding you do all the stimulating. Tell us more of what the cross body thing is. Regards, Carlton H. Fung, D.D.S. I actually posted a blurb here last year for it and plan to do so again :-) Currently, the flyer is up at our site and the rules from last year are there. As far as I know, there haven't been any rule changes this year. I'll find out for sure on Sunday, though, and update the site if there are any changes. The school's site is http://www.asianfightingarts.com The Arnold flyer and a link to the rules can be found at http://www.asianfightingarts.com/aboc To find out more about the Arnold event in general, go to http://www.wuma.com I've been a little bit out of the loop in the preparation for this one since I was living in Texas until a couple of months ago. As far as I know, though, the preparation is in full swing. I'll get a full update on Sunday and I'm sure I'll have website updates to make after this weekend :-) Mike --- chanoaim@bellsouth.net wrote: > Amen. > > Please keep us the Digest subscribers aware/posted > on the stick fighting portion of the Arnold Classic > being held in Columbus, OH in Early March 2003. When you are also following up with something like a strike with your other hand (or, in many cases, firing simultaneously with the "block"), you'll be disrupting his other hand even more. You can also attack that other hand where it is (particularly useful if you think or know he may be drawing a weapon with it). Hope that helps :-) Mike --- Michael Koblic wrote: > My > problem is, how do I stop eating the left hand > follow up punch? He is quoted in relation to many MAs. I see it on boards everywhere. I think part of the reason (in the FMA) is Guro Dan's influence on so many people. Even people who don't train with him have usually attended seminars or read articles/books by him. He sometimes quotes Bruce when making points ... and since the point made is relevant to FMA (or whatever Guro Dan is teaching at that point), the quote sticks in people's minds as a reminder of that point. Another reason is that a lot of what Bruce said/wrote is universal. It applies to any MA ... and, often, to non-MA endeavors as well. Also, most of the quotes from Bruce are simply his wording of much older philosophies ... which are again, often universal in their possible applications. I think that many of Bruce's quotes have become so standard in the MA awareness at large that it's almost become a short-hand method of communicating particular concepts. And then, of course, there are the "Bruce-o-philes" who quote him just because "he said/wrote it ... it's gospel and should be spread." And, last but not least, are the people who don't think their own words have any validity so they use Bruce's words as a kind of trump card in conversations. (this isn't the case every time someone quotes him, but I've seen it happen) I think that all of these (and possibly more) come together to make Bruce quotes very popular in MA discussion (JKD or otherwise). I hope you and your loved ones had a safe and fun filled eve. In reference to the cross body block, I am thinking that picking up the incoming second hand with the elbow, checking the shoulder of the second hand-side by jamming with the body or slipping it is the best bet. Either that or utilizing footwork to get out of range of the second hit."zoning?" It all depends on the situation and the set up etc. etc. Thats my two cents. I wish you all another year of injury free training!! Gordon --------------------------------- Post your free ad now! Yahoo! I would think nothing of it except for the fact that I need to think in order to pick up the next series of lessons and have problems due to this phenomenon. For any of you that are educated in this area, is there a dietary supplement or a dietary modification that I can make to alleviate this problem? It seems that electrolyte balance pointed to a clue about this problem. Sincerely, Gordon --------------------------------- Post your free ad now! Yahoo!
