Do you stay up late at night snacking w/ the boys or drinking? I notice and so have others in my class, that these type of activities make one a bit like how you describe, thought maybe not totally to your extent. I don't drink, but in my case sometimes if I don't get enough sleep or have worked quite a bit before practice, I notice my mind haveing problems concentrating. I've observed that eating a heavy meal the night before or not having enough sleep totally wrecks my recovery time. It's like some of the old school boxers who admit that the old steak and potatoes ( a very heavy meal) the night before acc. to their trainers used to do more damage than good. I've heard some of these old athletes reminisce that during a fight they'd sp[end the first couple of rounds trying to shake off the lethargy caused by digesting the heavy carb and protein meal they ate the night before, forced by the their coach of course. -Erwin Legaspi "All I have ever longed for in my life . . . a vision of God." - 9th and 10th century Sufi mystic Mansur Al-Hallaj "Intellect and intelligence do not go together. Body of murdered ex-Datuk taken home in unusual manner Jasbir Singh and V. Ramanan It was an unusual scene at the Hospital Kuala Lumpur mortuary today when the body of a former Datuk, businessman Tan Hok Low, was taken home seated in the front seat of a four-wheel drive vehicle. Against hospital regulations, Tan's relatives drove their Toyota Landcruiser into the morgue foyer and struggled to lift Tan's corpse onto the front seat. The front windscreen was covered from the inside with a "Mickey Mouse" sunshade, while a towel was draped over the side window to block the view of Tan's body, which was totally wrapped in blankets, except for his feet and one hand. Family members had refused to use a coffin or hearse to transport Tan's body to his house in Banting. They were apparently following a seldom-practised Chinese tradition where a person who dies outside the home is taken home as if he were alive and served tea, before being placed in a coffin inside the house. When approached, Tan's wife and relatives, including his 11-year-old eldest son, declined to speak to reporters. A morgue official said this was the first time in his 12 years of service that he had seen a body being taken home in this manner. Tan, 38, was shot dead by two gunmen about 10.15pm last night while having dinner with three others at Sakura Restaurant in Jalan Imbi. His friend, identified only as See, was shot in the chest while the remaining two escaped. See's condition remained critical. He is warded at the Gleneagles Intan Medical Centre's intensive care unit, guarded around the clock by officers from the city police headquarters. A restaurant waitress was also injured by shattered glass during the commotion caused by customers fleeing from the restaurant. The gunmen fired a total of seven shots, one of which shattered the restaurant's window. Police recovered five spent 9mm casings and also found an automatic pistol near the restaurant early this morning. Tan and See were rushed to the Gleneagles Intan Medical Centre in Jalan Ampang, but Tan was dead on arrival and his body was immediately taken to the KLH mortuary for a post-mortem. Tan hit the headlines when he was stripped of his Dato' Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah (DSSA) award on Nov 5 last year, following police investigation of his alleged misconduct. Following the consent of Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, the decision was announced on Nov 27 by State Secretary Datuk Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof. The Sultan had also withdrawn the datukship of another businessman, Robert Chan Wai Ing. Tan was bestowed his title in 1999 while Chan received his in 2001. According to a source quoted by Bernama, Tan lost his title because he pointed a pistol at a motorcyclist and was also involved in illegal gambling. Besides, Tan was held under the 1969 Emergency Ordinance for being involved in secret society activities. He was the director of Syarikat Milion Tech Sdn Bhd. City Criminal Investigations Department chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Kamaruddin Mat Desa said today they had narrowed down the motives for Tan's murder to revenge, business rivalry and jealousy. He said police were also investigating Tan's past, including the police case which led to the loss of his State award, and his business activities, to get at the motive for the gangland-style killing. Kamaruddin said investigating officers interviewed Tan's widow today. The questioning centred on Tan's business background, activities and his circle of friends. "At this point I cannot reveal too much, except to say that his death can be linked to his business and possible revenge. It's too early to talk about the other aspects of the investigation." No arrests have been made. Police have also not ruled out the possibility that the shooting was carried out by hired killers. Sounds like you're both arriving at the same time. Of course it can be done if you're faster and more committed than the other guy, but it works better against a committed straight right as opposed to a combination. Sounds like your training partner is throwing a good combination, i.e., even though he knows the forearm hack is coming, he's decided to get there first with the left. He might behave differently if you fold your right arm (left inside forearm against the right side of your head) and point your right elbow at his fist as it's coming in (elbow destruction). Not my favorite technique but an example of disrupting his intention by changing the parameters of the drill. (BTW, the elbow destruction works just as well if you use it to crash into his face with your elbow instead of trying to "pick off" his punch. You should also move slightly laterally to the left as you go in to change the line.) I was taught to lean back and away when using the "cross-body" block, and then to change levels by attacking the groin with the right hammerfist (i.e., the right hand makes a counter-clockwise vertical circle). This changes the timing and distancing of the technique and allows you a little more room. Interestingly, the technique as you describe it is done at long range with espada y daga; the counter downward backhand strike with the stick is always trained as a cover against his thrust with the daga.
