Does anyone know of a good book or online resource for pronunciation? Dean -- --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "Travis F." Make him do all the responding you do all > the stimulating. Tell us more of what the cross body thing is." I definitely agree with Doc here, your rasa or mental attitude should be as above. If you go in the reactive mode you're going to eat it. The physical aspect of silat is not such much defensive but to counter and go offensive and as always timing is everything. > I apologise for the lack of clarity. I don't have the video but it sounds interesting. In anycase this is just one entry (masuk) out of many. I disagree with the above though. Drill'em all. The outside is usually favored because you (at least temporarily) cut off the effectiveness of the opponent using their far side arm and leg. As Oom Jim Ingram likes to say there are two main djurus (upper body fundamentals) inside or into the force and outside - avoid the force. Though I do like this particular entry you are doing three motions (no matter how concise) in response to their one, something to keep in mind. Ideally one should parry or slip a strike and successfully strike at the same time! Oom has mentioned William Loreo favored doing this and Oom Dolf de Vries mentioned and showed examples that his father Ventje, the noted fig hter, favored last August in Holland in contrast to his Uncle John. This changes the timing and distancing of the technique and allows you a little more room" Yes, the tapes show a neat little variation similar to this. Mr. Orlando uses the "strike left" variation instead of "block left" variation. This is as follows: 1) right hand blocks the right hand punch cross-body 2) The left hand instead of checking goes straight over the top with the palm attacking the face 3) Turn sideways, drop into a horse stance and use the now free right hand to backhand the groin I just love this stuff as it is designed for short people with not much much power needed. On the other hand it is not what I would call intuitive and requires a lot of work to understand and internalize. I wish someone showed me when I was 11!
