Ideally one should parry or slip a strike and successfully strike at the same time!" Right! And Mr. Orlando makes the same point. One wants to be in the "strike mode". But us tossers must start somewhere. But perhaps that is what bothers me about it. In all other arts I studied the block is one motion followed by a suitable riposte. Mr. T. Blauer teaches a SPEAR which is a "twitch response" based on, as far as I can tell, either a double handed block from silat or kenpo. Mr. MacYoung teaches (in his book) a "wedge" which looks similar. I think they are all based on the fact that inside a phone booth there is little time for extraneous movement when the fecal matter hits the fan... Meanwhile I am saving for a trip to Denver... Interestingly I have met many people that think the elbow is the "cats meow". I think that this happens because most people have not figured out how to spar it in real-time and not kill each other, hence never really find the weaknesses. I will say the elbow is very desvastating but has huge weakness in delivery. It is easily picked off and re directed as a big blunt thing coming at you. If you are an elbow headhunter you are all the more vulnerable. In Gotch submission and Hooking and other wrestling arts there are some great takedowns that really exploit the weakness of the elbow and put you is some very bad positions if you are still concious after the throws. For those non-grapplers who love elbows you should explore what grapplers can do to you. Regards, C.H. Fung, D.D.S. If this is what is happening here are a few comments. Saying on the inside has immediately higher risk but higher reward than staying on the outside. Staying on the outside is initially safer but increases your risk because you have to take more risks on a now educated oponant to work back into the sweet spot. The 2 of the 1-2 should be thought of as always coming. prepare for it and counter it or be counter offensive and your defense becomes the new 1-2 and let him eat your fist. Zoning and footwork are key to power delivery. how you actually deliever the power (fist knee elbow) is not important as long as you do it first. Regards, C.H. Fung, D.D.S. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I'm just starting out in Filipino martial arts, my first lesson is scheduled for today at House of Champions in Van Nuys, CA (http://www.houseofchampions.com). Does anyone on this list have any experience with this facility? It's not exclusively FMA, they also do other styles there, so I'm not sure if it's the best place for FMA. Also, I tried searching the archives for this list but got an error message. Has anyone been able to access the archives? Thanks, Ryan Meyering _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 with e-mail virus protection service: 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/virus --__--__-- Message: 7 From: Ray Terry Subject: Re: [Eskrima] FMA at House of Champions? Check out www.haganah.com for instruction (Mike Lee Kanarek of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida). In addition, to empty hands and impact weapons, he also teaches Israeli style combat shooting. He has tapes/dvd on the market too @ http://www.fight2survive.com/index.jsp On a couple of trips to Florida, I have had a chance to train with him, and he is the real deal.
