My father being a Judo master but a Katch fighter first who had a street fighting background, and lived in England for a couple years during WWII, and fought at the Famous Pit there. He preached to me all my life that if you take someone to the ground and you still have to fight you F%$ked up!!!! He had this saying "Don't let them break fall, make them break when they fall" I was always taught elbows, knees, shoulder, hip or head into your opponent as you go down, delivering as much force and body weight into your opponent as possible. In real street applications you can't afford to roll around and hump your opponents leg. I teach what my father use to call Gopher throwing ( more recent term is the Wiley E. Coyote school of throwing) , I almost always try to drive my opponents head into the ground with my hand, shoulder or what ever I can get on him as I take him down, in many occasions trying to leave my own feet so I can get my full weight behind me. Many a old time grappling matches were ended on a throw or take down, actually throw is kind of a misleading term, you really never want to throw your opponent away from you want him close and tight so you can better punish him. Unless you need to throw him towards a second opponent. Don't get me wrong I am not trying to dis any of the BJJ guys they are awesome ground fighters, but for me I don't want to be there, I think the best as we all know is a mixture take the excellent ground fighting from BJJ, Katch, or Ukrainian Grappling, but for ultimate take downs and crushing throws for the street, Katch and Ukrainian and some of the Russian stuff is hard to beat. Infact I had read one of his published books and studied it just last semester. When did GM Lema pass away? What caused his death? Eskrima is pronounced as ESKRIMA ---> es-kri-ma...get it?well I hope you had pronounced it correctly...anyway, how you pronounce it doesn't really matter. What matters the most is how you practice it and what have you done to improve your skills for the benifit of Eskrima and for your own...:) Navarro,Fulbert A. ===== N.F.A 1140461-7 GEN.RED __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? One of our favorites parts of putting together a Dog Brothers video is choosing the quotes with which we begin them. Your quote is from "Baudelaire". The quote appears in our second series at the beginning of DBMA #3"Combining Stick & Footwork". Glad you like it. yip, Crafty Dog --__--__-- Message: 5 From: Ray Terry Subject: Re: [Eskrima] GM Lema Died? But he was born in 1919, so he lived a good long life. Many will recall his name and fame for years to come. If you start teaching way above their heads, or chastise instead of teach, and one of them strikes you for it you are to realise what you are doing and turn the other cheek. That being said, he also (being a former Marine and one of the Chosen Few from the Korean War) said that if he was walking down the street and is attacked, he would have no problem laying the knucklehead out. He'd pray for him later.
