So some of the basic/junior forms are from Okinawan styles for the hard. This was due to Benjamin Ortiz and another senior instructor that were of those styles and that is where the hard style of Kuntaw comes from. If you get into advanced Kuntaw it goes to what his father taught him. Just a couple pennies of fact --__--__-- Message: 2 From: Afern27@aol.com Date: Thu, 23 Jan 2003 20:08:30 EST To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Combat Judo? Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Isn't the name Comjuka (the system taught by Tuhon Gaudiosa Ruby) just a shortened way to write Combat Judo Kali? That would be yet another FMA-related mention of combat judo... --__--__-- Message: 3 From: "jay de leon" To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Cc: theclassic33@hotmail.com Date: Fri, 24 Jan 2003 03:08:28 +0000 Subject: [Eskrima] Combat Judo Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net OK, here's another version of combat judo. When I was at the Ateneo de Manila high school, the school offered two new extra-curricular sports program, "Kodokan Judo" and "Combat Judo." Since I had already spent several months in Kodokan Judo, the choice was obvious for me. A distant cousin, Vic Velasquez, joined the "Combat Judo" class and afforded me an insight as to the differences between the two programs. The CJ people wore street clothes and practiced in secrecy. We KJ students laid out our mat at one end of the Ateneo "covered courts" and shared space with basketball, chess, volleyball and other intramural sports, and we wore the traditional judo gis. The CJ people did the same throws we did--hip throws, shoulder throws, outer and inner reapings, etc., but combined kicks, punches, locks and chokes with them. For example, they would execute a thumb lock and then do a kataguruma, breaking your thumb with the throw. After a few weeks, all of them were carrying "yawaras" stuck in their pants. Vic also told me that their instructor (who was Filipino) claimed that he trained in Japan. Following the dictum, if it quacks like a duck, etc., it would appear to me they were practicing some form of jiu-jitsu. My first instructor at the Ateneo High School Judo Club was Jose "Pinggoy" Asuncion, a national judo champion who later became a big action movie star more popularly known as Vic Vargas. He was replaced by Master Florendo Arambulo, a Kodokan-trained blackbelt and Quezon City police officer. Although I saw him around campus a few times, I never got the chance to talk with the Combat Judo instructor. They practiced in secrecy, remember? _________________________________________________________________ The new MSN 8: advanced junk mail protection and 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues are available via ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com.
