Or to put this in a slightly different perspective... > would some Inayian players become upset if one of the late Suro's > students began using that title in conjuction with the term "Inayian > 2000" for instance? Point taken. However not quite the same. Professor is a generic title, in MA use prior to use by Remy and well used since. The title Mangisursuro/Suro was coined by Mike. Your actual point is perhaps that these, perhaps hard, feelings may only be fully appreciated by Remy's students. That I can understand and empathize with fully. But I suspect few would worry about an "Inayian 2000" since it is spelled Inayan... :) Ray Terry rterry@idiom.com --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "Absolom Jones" To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Date: Thu, 30 Jan 2003 16:52:32 +0000 Subject: [Eskrima] Re: Clumsy, Tom Bolden, Professor issue and A Symposium Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net "Ernest Westbrook" >Subject: [Eskrima] Re: Clumsy > >Well, I guess the writer has never seen or worked with PG Tom Bolden or >Ama Guro Billy Bryant or Mr. Lamont Norshadow.  They are all >"Westerners", but far from being "Clumsy", large bodied, or Asian... >damn >it, there goes that rythmn thing again... (hint) > >EBrook, THE Wicked Western Warlock WEll folks, I do not know about Ama Guro Billy Bryant or Mr. Lamont Norshadow, because I have never seen them in action either in person or on video, but I have absolutely no doubts about PG Tom Bolden!!! The man is the real deal. He is a fantastic eskrimador, there is NOTHING, heavy, large or clumsy about his movement. While I do understand the gist of what the original writer was saying, as quoted, I have to agree with EBrook, that writer never experienced working with PG Bolden. On the matter of using Professor, I will leave that up to Mr. Anderson. Anyone assuming that title in any system or style has taken on quite a burden of responsibilty. For those of you who are interested in a different type of summer training experience, consider attending the 2003 Modern Arnis International Symposium, in Buffalo NY on July 11, 12 & 13. Mr. Anderson and PG Bolden will be teaching there along with the following Modern Arnis instructors: Dan Anderson - Modern Arnis 80 Tom Bolden - American Modern Arnis Associates Bruce Chiu - Modern Arnis - Remy Presas Style Bram Frank - Common Sense Self Defense/ Street Combat Tim Hartman - World Modern Arnis Allience Dieter Knuttel - Modern Arnis - Germany - Remy Presas Style Dan McConnell - IMAF, Inc. Dawud Muhammad - IMAF-Remy Presas Style David Ng - IMAF, Inc. Rocky Paswik - Modern Arnis - Cuentada J. Richard Roy - IMAF, Inc. Peter Vargas - American Modern Arnis Associates According to Adam Toussaint, in a post on another forum: >This program is being modeled after the Kenpo Gathering of Eagles. For >those of you who have attended either of both the 1999 and 2001 >events, >you know the fun and excitment that can generate from such a >program. PG >Tom Bolden was awarded "Senior Master" status at the 2001 >Gathering of >Eagles. It just doesn't get much better that that for us, >does it? I don't know about you, but I am very impressed when a man goes to a major event, which has some 800 people in attendence and recieves a very distingushed award, outside of his own field of specialization! He was an eskrimador, presenting at a kenpo function, with and against kenpo/kajukenbo masters and grand masters. That is talent! So I am sure that the clumsy remake was made, without ever having seen PG Tom Bolden, in action. But perhaps it would be better, if people checked this man out for themselves at the 2003 symposium. I mean, as long as the foundation is there, what harm could there be in trying to be creative? This is art, not religion, after all. Yes, he was the real deal, and he owes his showbiz career to judo. While Pinggoy was teaching our club, he was also in a live sports show called "Judo and Quick Draw" out of Channel 7, Bob Stewart's channel in Quezon City. The show was hosted by Eddie Limjap, an agent and judo and firearms instructor for the NBI (National Bureau of Investigation, the counterpart of the FBI). Pinggoy demonstrated the judo throws and techniques during the judo segment. He was "discovered" by a major film studio, starred in his first film "Diegong Tabak" which showcased his rugged looks, sculptured physique and martial arts prowess, and the rest was showbiz history. Unfortunately, we also lost our Kodokan judo instructor. Going back to the show, this was the first time I saw quick draw experts go against a target and a timer, and actually clear holster and hit the target at a fraction (one-third, even one-fourth) of a second. Don't forget this was in the early 60's. The other point is the idea of seniority or how I had stated that RP didn't say to my face that anyone was my senior, I need to clarify.  When I use the term my senior, I should have said "he who has authority over me."  That says it better.  Remy Presas had authority over me.  He did not state that anyone else had authority over me.  That is what I meant by that.  There are others in the Philippines who were promoted to higher rank than I was and I acknowledge that fully. I do thank everyone who took the time to state their opinions in this forum.  I am not asking for permission for this or that so I am not basing my decisions on the basis of public response but I do appreciate the input.  I did this to verify what has been said by another as to whether it is true or not.
