My girlfriends grandfather(the guy who taught me, actually) is from Kauai. He says he remembers his father and uncles talking about Floro, saying he was alright, but he doesn't know if they ever met or fought. He tells us that his father and uncles only called it kahoy(stick). I tend to explain it as stick or stickfighting, as I was taught "sticks" or "escrima/eskrima". What is the straight translation of stickfighting into Visayan? Also, his father was from a muslim town, whereas his mother was catholic, and nearer to central, I think. We(Stuart, James, Kalani, myself) were also taught orasyon, some sayaw(single/double/pangamut), history, and language. Modern Arnis with some >Chinese martial similarities. I would love to see it, Rocky. Jose Millan (Go) transfused his knowledge of Balintawak and Go Cho Kun creating a style which he called Tat Kun Tao. I don't know whether GM Remy was influenced by this or many of the other Kung Fu styles available around Cebu. Lapunti also has a Chinese MA influence from the collaboration between GM Filemon Caburnay and John Chiuten. >I have always been secretly hoping someone would >validate GM Villabrille's account of a certification >being issued him by Gov. General Frank Murphy in 1933. >From most angles, the story is true since Frank >Murphy was indeed Gov-Gen. from 1931-1935. I understand this will drag up the old thread about accuracies in Guro Dans book BUT.... Guro Dan's book makes reference to this certificate (or a copy) and a photograph of Villabrille kept in the Cebu Municipal Museum next to a large painting of Lapu Lapu. Even back in the early 80's no one knew of its existence(I looked and asked) I checked again (1995) to find that the Museum had been renovated. If Villabrille was such a champ why was he unknown to all the old teachers in Cebu? Although a little before his time I'm sure GM Cacoy should have heard about him. By the way he was written up in Guro Dan's book he sounds as famous as "Babe Ruth". --__--__-- Message: 3 From: Ray Terry Subject: Re: [Eskrima] sundry To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net (Eskrima) Date: Mon, 3 Feb 2003 19:23:43 -0800 (PST) Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net > ... reference to this certificate > (or a copy) and a photograph of Villabrille kept in the Cebu Municipal > Museum next to a large painting of Lapu Lapu. Confirmed by at least one other FMA researcher that also checked in and around Cebu. > If Villabrille was such a champ why was he unknown to all the old > teachers in Cebu? I've asked Gm Cacoy about Floro. He heard the name, later. He guessed, correctly, that Floro's age was in between him and that of Momoy. His take was that Floro made his rep in Hawaii, not the RP. No problem there...
